GIMP - Configuration and others?

Following good advice from this forum I have downloaded GIMP and the help file. When I run GIMP and try to open the help file it will only do this on-line and in addition if I use F1 this brings up the Microsoft help file. Have tried deleting and reloading both downloads but to no avail. Do I have to configure GIMP to see the help file and how?

Earlier this week I saw a demonstration of photo composition which was cutting bits out of different photos to create a different image and was done using Lightroom and Ellements. Pottering about with GIMP it looks like many of the operations are common so are these product so much better than GIMP?

Most photo edition programs have roughly the same functions. Some of them have more automated feel to them. I've never used GIMP so I can't compare, but I've read it's pretty close to Photoshop. Lightroom and Elements have editing power that are not as advanced as Photoshop, but they also are used to catalog photos and rate them to create albums and books if needed.

Check if the Gimp help file plugin is installed.
If not, you may have to install it.

And yes, GIMP can do pretty much everything other programs do...
None is necessarily better, just your personal preference.
GIMP is one killer program and it's open source

Thanks for all that useful info. Had a look into the plugins and the help file is shown in the tree view only. I thought I had cracked it as under "preferences" I was able to select use local or on-line, however when I select local it tells me that a version has not been installed. Will keep doodling away.

Until you mentioned it, I did not check Help. I am getting the same thing, and I'm using a Mac and using Gimp 2.8.4. It must be a cross-platform problem.

I just removed the latest GIMP version from my computer and installed 2.0.7 I find it to be easier to use for me mainly because they changed the toolbox radically in the latest version...
