nef file issue with Rawtherapee

Hi

I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum but if anyone could advise that would be great.

I have recently purchased a D3200 and after taking photos and uploding them to my lap top I am having the following issue.

When I use the Nikon software the images are fine, see below:
Fullscreen capture 25032013 210404.jpg

But when I open them in Rawtherapee the they darken and I have red line running down the right side:
Fullscreen capture 25032013 211009.jpg

This also happens in Picasa:

Why is this happening, i want to make minor edits to these images and software like Picasa is corrupting the photos. This is happening to all the photos.

Please Help.

I apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.

Re: Please help.

Hi

Thank you for the response.

Yes, I am shooting in RAW and the line is there when I view the RAW images in Picasa and other software but does not appear in View NX2.

I have used View NX2 to convert to JPEG and when I view the JPEGS in Picasa or other software the JPEGS are fine.

I don't know what it is but I get this sometimes when I open my D600 nef files with Photomatix… But it's not a big deal since as when I convert the files it disappears.

Re: Please help.

I have used RawTherapee 3.0.0 on RAW files from my D3000 and D7000, and have not had that problem on my laptop running Ubuntu Linux 12.04. Although you have not mentioned it, operating system are you using? That may have something to do with it. I have also used DarkTable 0.9.3 on both Linux and Mac OS X without problems. Be sure you have the latest NEF codecs installed. That may be part of your problem.

Re: Please help.

If you plan on uploading them to the Web, sending them to others, etc., you will have to convert them to jpeg first. I normally do any processing on my files prior to converting them to jpeg. You can do a lot more editing with the RAW file without losing quality than you can with jpeg. I look at jpeg as my final output, or "print" if you want to look at it that way.

Re: Please help.

That is exactly why this is worrying me I want to edit in raw but the images are being corrupted, I have installed the codecs and I still have this problem.

Re: Please help.

If you want to use open source software, try Darktable. I have had very good luck with it. I tried RawTherapee in Linux and was not as happy with it as compared to Darktable. I found RawTherapee a little clunky and awkward to use.

Re: Please help.

Well, the problem is that I am running Windows and darktable is not on this platform.

That sucks. I actually like Darktable. I am glad it is available for both OS X and Linux. Since you are running Windows, why don't you use ViewNX2? I think it works much better than RawTherapee and is more intuitive. I run a lot of my stuff through it, especially when I don't need to do a lot of editing of the image. Just be sure to go on Nikon's Website and download the latest version. I think it is now up to 2.7.2.

Hope some of this helps.

Re: Please help.

It sounds like a software conflict thingy to me... Once the codecs are installed, practically any software can use 'em and display that output properly, and when this doesn't happen..., it's suspicious.
I've seen this in the past, moved pictures to another computer where those symptoms didn't show, and ultimately a reformat & reinstallation of the software sorted out that red/blue/yellow/grey strip problem.

Worth a try, perhaps??

Re: Please help.

I have just uninstalled RawT and re-installed it, still have the same issue...

In that case, the underlying operating system might be at fault. Or it might also be a hardware mishap... This is where this thread goes out of the photography topic, and I could write a whole book on what to do next, as the culprit of your problem might as well be a bit unpredictable...

If you have access to another computer with the equivalent (graphic processing) software installed, I'd try loading your pictures onto that and watch the results & differences. As I mentioned before, a complete format & reinstall (after backing up your data) might just sort out a bunch of little problems you don't know how to deal with right now...

Still in trouble? Then see what's easier: A computer wipe-out and reinstall, or just change your camera to shoot in JPEG ???

Thank you very much my friend! I had the same issue with the raw files from my D800e and switched to Dark Table and no red line any more! Lol Woohoo! :D
