I really have not picked up any camera since December but I am hopeful that will change soon. I am REALLY getting the itch! 0 Thanks/Like
We are at 7000 MSL and surrounded on all 4 sides by mountains. There is a 3000' peak about 15 miles from here that is just begging to be climbed and camped on. The town is small and the nearest Walmart is 50 miles away but who cares. There is a miniature "Bass Pro Shop" right next to the hospital. It is loaded chock full of all kinds of goodies. 1 Thanks/Like Rick M Thanks/liked this post ...
Back to civilization and blessed WARMTH. I will never go back to that black hole of humanity 0 Thanks/Like
This cultural black hole and winter weather is just not what I expected. I have finished up a month early from what I was sent up here to do and I talked it over with the lab supervisor and she begrudgingly allowed me to go home early. I did not get the wildlife photos I wanted to get up here but photos are not worth the extra month 0 Thanks/Like ...
I have seen them off a ways in the tundra behind the hospital but right now they are a mile or so away. As it gets colder I am told that they will move in closer. A polar bear strayed into town last week and was promptly shot and killed. It was skinned and it's body left by a dumpster to rot, minus its head and paws. It was a rather dismaying sight 0 Thanks/Like ...
So I will venture out today, camera gear in hand and see what I can shoot! The Natives came in about last night around 10 PM with a catch of walrus they had caught. The meat and blubber gets divvied up amongst the natives. The tusks on that that thing were massive, probably 2 feet long. I only saw photos of it, but then I was preparing 0 Thanks/Like ...
When I left Pensacola FL last Saturday it waas 89º and sunny. I arrived in Barrow the next day and was greeted by 36º, foggy and light rain. It was culture shock to say the least. This time of year it is light 24 hours a day. I am told in another couple of months the caribou will be all over the place, as well as seals and polar bears. 0 Thanks/Like ...
I got my itinerary to Alaska today. TWENTY FIVE HOURS of travel time for crying out loud! Pensacola to Houston to San Francisco to Anchorage to Fairbanks to Barrow. I leave Pensacola just after noon on Saturday and arrive in Barrow about quarter after 10 the next morning (but they are 3 hours behind us.) Someone from the hospital should 0 Thanks/Like ...
