Are you referring to the Tamron 70-210mm f/4.0-5.6? Tamron lenses are generally cheaper than Nikkor lenses and can be a good alternative.
You can get one for about $100. In this case you also need the Nikon 'Adaptall' mount.

I have a Tamron 85~210 lens...it's my favourite!!!! I have a nikon D90...and it works great on it...but I can only use it in manual mode..but that's okay, cause I very seldom if at all use auto mode
