Nikon D40 Autofocus issue

I have a Nikon D-40 that will not take pictures in Autofocus mode without holding the AE-L/AF-L button. When in Auto mode, the lens focuses, I get the green infocus dot, but the shutter will not fire. I have done a soft reset (Custom Menu) and a hard reset (reset button next to USB port). Same issue. Firmware is A 1.12 B 1.00 . Manual mode works fine. Any ideas?

Nikon says you have to update BOTH the A. and B. firmware and have them matched evenly for good operation... I notice you have the A and B firmware different? -Why???

I would suggest you go to the Nikon website and look up the D40 software, follow the instructions, and update BOTH the A. and B. to the latest versions. After that, I would do a complete firmware reset again on the camera...

Perhaps that might help?

Info from Nikon about D40 firmware is:

About this firmware update
The download provides software for upgrading D40 A firmware to v1.12. The camera’s B firmware must be Ver. 1.11 to upgrade A firmware to Ver. 1.12. Be aware that proper operation of your D40 is not guaranteed with the combination of A firmware Ver. 1.12 and B firmware Ver. 1.00 or Ver. 1.10.

I would upgrade the B to version 1.11, then go back and re-upgrade the A to 1.12. See how things work then..?
