Lens for D40 camera

It depends on what you want to take pictures of. The 35mm prime is a great lens for the price and takes wonderful portraits.

What if you want to take lots of different pictures? Particularly ones that are from a distance and you want to achieve quite close up results? I just have the basic kit lens for the D40x. Thanks

Then I would suggest you get the always popular 55-200mm VR lens. Now you'll be covered from 18mm (18-55) and 200mm (55-200).

Great I might try that one. What would be an expected price to pay for one (so I don't get ripped off) and the best place to find one that's not over the top expensive?

Well, I don't know what the prices are like in Australia, but I can put you on to someone who just might be able to tell you that. Go to www.pixelinduced.com and talk to Joe Fernandez. He lives in Sydney and should be able to help you out. :)
Here in Canada, I paid about $220 for mine.
