Helpful Posts feature

You'll now see a 'Was this post helpful - yes | no" at the top right of every post in regular forums. This was put in place to track which posts are helpful within threads. Once a post gets a certain number of votes (currently set at 2) it will be linked to from the top of the thread as the most helpful post. Members will receive reputation and points for helpful posts.

This feature may be tweaked a little once more posts are voted on. Post your opinions on it here.

Having not used it yet, this seems like a useful feature. Most forums (including this one) have a "Rate this thread" option. But personally, I find that hard to use because a lot of times the whole thread isn't of the same calibre. Maybe once or twice it can be used to rate down an inane thread.
But the ability to give props to a well written, well though-out response or original post seems like a good idea. Hopefully it'll get good use here, and encourage people to useful information.

Yeh, that's the idea - to encourage useful posting. I've used this same system on another site I run for 'useful posting' contests.

I don't want features to get redundant, however. Since getting a helpful post rating also contributes to the reputation, which is another points scale, but weighted based on the giving member's reputation, there's really no need to have a separate 'give reputation', link. The thread rating can stay in place for rating the thread as a whole. Not all threads are going to be question/answer based either.

Now I'm seeing "This post is collapsed due to low votes, click expand to view" or something like that. It's collapsing individual posts within the thread, and I must say I'm not a fan. Is this a feature we can turn off in user settings?

Sorry - that was an error on my part - it is now corrected.

I figured it was probably a setting that needed tweaked in the plug-in. I like this feature (sans the collapsing posts) overall. Sometimes threads can wander off track or turn into idle chit-chat, despite there being a good topic at hand where people might be searching for good answers.

The part that collapses the posts is only meant to do so if the posts gets 5 no's.

There's another feature that isn't working correctly that will link to the 'most helpful post' in a thread under the first post. I'm looking into getting that working correctly :)

Today you'll see that the most helpful post is now highlighted and linked to from the top of the thread. :)
