What are your OTHER interests?

Everyone here is interested in photography. But that can't be ALL you are interested in.
So share your other interests. Since I started this, I'll share first, with pictures.

I love oil and acrylic painting. I know that my work is amateurish at best, but I really don't care. It is very relaxing. Here are the pix.

So don't be a wuss. Let us in on your life.

Looks pretty darn good to me, Pete! I've always been somewhat of an artist myself, but put a paintbrush in my hands and I'm all thumbs. Never could paint worth a darn LOL.

For me, my other hobby is model railroading and railfanning. My grandfather had a nice basement empire, and when you're exposed to something like that as a child, it's kind of hard to get it out of your system. I do not have a layout myself yet, but have accumulated enough stuff over the years to one day build a nice setup when I have the time. Railfanning is where my interest in photography stemmed from. Some people call us "train stalkers" and other stuff, but there are people like me who are enamored with trains and all things rail-related. I even like reading up on old histories and finding old railroad buildings.

Howdy Anthony;

Did you hear about the idiot down here in NC that got hisself run over by a train?
Seems that there were a group of idiots looking for a ghost train and found a real one instead.
I know its probably sad and all that, but I never thought it was THAT hard to tell the difference between a real train
and a ghost train.
I just hope this idiot never had the time to breed OTHER little idiots.
His name was Christopher Kaiser.

I don't think anyone would guess my other interest. I collect, restore, and repair antique clocks. I have about 70 of them spread out around the house. One room in my house is setup as a miniature machine shop where I can manufacture just about any part I need. My wife doesn't complain because she collects, repairs, and restores antique quilts. She has as many if not more quilts than I have clocks. We also built a very large addition to the back of the house just for her quilts and sewing stuff. Go figure. I don't keep the clocks running. That's too many to keep up with. I do have eight cuckoo clocks of which I usually have one running.

I have an old Cuckoo clock that wants to continually remind me that it is 38 o'clock. Since I KNOW it is only 20 o'clock, I suspect this clock has a problem.
Dude, you are a PHOTOGRAPHER! Post a picture or two. I would love to see some of your favorites in your collection.

I agree...let's see some cuckoo clocks! That sounds like a pretty cool hobby, Joe. I saw a tv show on the Discovery channel about an antique clock repair shop. Some of the odd things that came through the doors were really amazing.

And yes, Pete, I remember reading about the Ghost Train incident. Almost as dumb as people who try to beat a train through the crossing. Guess they just don't understand that the winner has already been decided if there's a tie.

Pete, I love the colors in all your paintings. Keep up the good work!

Anthony, I still have the train set I got when I was 5 yrs old . . . american Flyer . . .in all our moves, the transformer got lost. Love the sounds of the old locomotives and whistles.

We have our share of people getting run over by trains. But it's usually because they're drunk and forgot that they're sitting on a rail.

My horses and dogs keep me busy (and fit, I hope) when I'm not photographing. they're also often my best models (and best friends, too)

You are a Photo Audio Visual and you eat R's.

I don't get it!

What does that have to do with flying?

Just kidding!!! I am not really that stupid. Close, but no pipe.

Seriously, we have a very eclectic group here, from auto racing to flying. From clock restoration to painting and small scale railroading.
But who has noticed the common denominator amongst all of us?

Think about it and post the answer.
Winner gets to be the winner!
If no one is right, then I am the winner only if everyone agrees with my answer.

Post away.

Apart from my interest in photography, I am a geocacher. "I use millions of pounds worth of government satellite equipment to hunt tupperware in the woods." In short terms this means I use a GPS to find items hidden by other geocachers. There are over a million hidden geocaches around the world. You could be standing next to one and never know. Apart from finding hidden "treasure" my hobby takes me to interesting places I may never have found otherwise, I meet lots of interesting people and go to camping events four to five times a year with them. My other hobbies are walking, cycling, bodyboarding and birdwatching.

COOL!
If you think about it, most problem drinkers have walking as a hobby also.

Have you figured out the commonality between all of us yet?

I'm still waiting and hoping.

I enjoy sports; watching and playing. All sports: baseball, football, golf, auto racing, etc. That's probably why I got into sports photography. But it is near impossible to enjoy the game while shooting it. I'm too busy working to really enjoy the event. Even though lugging around nearly 50 pounds of gear, sometimes in 100 degree heat, or freezing temps is no picnic, I would never trade my sideline/field/pit pass for a seat at home on the couch in front of a 50" TV.

When I'm not working, I can be found riding my motorcycle, or at the firing range.

Actually, I think it may be too obvious to be easily seen.

So I'll give it up.

We are ALL very detail oriented. Clock repair, flying, Lenswork at the firing range, model railroading, auto racing, photography, geocache, even horseback riding! Every single one of us is very detail oriented.
THAT is our commonality.

If you dis-agree, then thoughtfully rebut.

Well Pete, I was gonna say something like:
"We're all still breathing", but I get what you're thinkin'.

Detail oriented players/workers/observers who happen to enjoy communicating the details we've seen in a pictorial form.
Somethin' like that? :)

My other 'stuff':
Motorcycle (1100); 357, 12 gauge, umpire uniforms, sharp kitchen knives, sports, etc., etc.
A head-scratching view of my environments, which is where the camera comes in to play.

Ha!
In one of my many 'deep thoughts', photographers can be compared to the minstrels of the middle ages.

'Cept we don't go round singin' and playin' a lute (thank whoever); we use the camera to tell the story...

Just like back in the day, there are 'professional' minstrels, a bunch o' hacks and a whole lot in between!

I agree, Pete. But I would also add this: we were able to name other things that we were passionate about. We're focused on photography but we haven't forgotten the rest of life.

Thanks for this thread, Pete. You are so cool!

Best Regards
