D40 - How do I upload photos from a digital camera to my computer?

I own a D40 camera. But for some reason my computer doesn't seem to ackowledge it when I plug in the USB cable. No "new software detected" warning or anything. I have it plugged at both ends, have tried turning on the camera, but nothing seems to work. How can I, I dunno, get the window to pop up? Or something?

Do you have a card reader on your computer? PC or Mac? If so, take the flash card out of the camera and plug into that slot ... if it fits - within a few seconds the card will auto load onto your desktop. Once the download is complete open the file that appears, and then open the file(s) within it. Once open, then drop the images where you want them .... I never upload images directly from my cameras and have always been successful using the approach above.

Dave's advice is spot on.

If you do not have one and one is not installed on your computer, go to the nearest office supply mega store [OfficeMax, Staples, etc.][ and look in the computer section for a Card Reader/Writer. Radio SHack has them as well. Mine was only $15 and while it allows you to download and upload from the card, its other important function is to isolate the camera from the computer. Plugging the camera directly to the computer could lead to problems.

another vote for the card reader, it's way quicker than plugging the camera into the computer

Absolutely right, Dave. There are portable card readers and built in card readers. I have a builtin one in my computer for at home work, and I have a portable one for when I'm at someone elses house where they might not have a card reader. It's USB driven. Very handy to have either one......or both! :)

Something caught my eye here about what you said.....about turning on the camera and then plugging into your computer. First, and most important, make sure your battery is FULLY charged. Turn on the camera next, THEN plug in your USB cable to the computer. That will bring up your pics on your screen. And seriously........really think about getting a card reader. Mine is the 58-1 kind, where it will read 58 different types of media cards. $20 at my local computer store.

I know for a fact that instructions for retrieving photos from your camera are definitely in your owners manual. :)

The other option, which is not as quick, is check your printer to see if it reads your memory card. When I first got my Nikon one of the first things the instructor cautioned us NOT to do was load directly from the camera to the computer -- too much drain on battery and the possibility of something getting on the camera that you don't want. I normally use the computer reader, but have an external reader that's a 17 in 1 that I take with me when traveling.

Re: How do I upload photos from a digital camera to my computer?

I'm going to go a little different route here and support downloading directly from the camera. While I have several card readers I alwyas prefer downloading direct from the camera because I have had issues in the past that over long term use I would have problems with the card being read in the computer meaning no matter what card I put in the computer it wouldn't read so my thought was that I had "worn out" the slot in the camera by taking the card in/out too many times. This happened with a P&S Sony as well as a Olympus E10.
Have you tried to use the "Nikon Transfer" program? As I don't have a D40 I cannot say if your camera can use this software, but I sucessfully use this on both my D3000 and D300S and love it. So this is just my $.02 as there are many opinions on this...

Card reader - goes with me wherever my camera goes. Way easier than transfer. If you have Windows, it should have a pop up box asking you where/what you want to do with the pictures. Did you install the software that came with your camera? You can also download from Nikon support.

May I suggest you invest in a card reader. That's the best suggestion I can offer. My backup camera uses the card reader so it seems to work for me, perhaps it would work for you...
