This is the only airworthy Avro Vulcan Bomber in the world and is due to be retired at then end of this year. It's an awesome sight and sound

She'll be sadly missed. I think we've all become a bit complacent with her turning up at a majority of the big airshows, and soon that'll be a thing of the past. Took this the other day, with the Red Arrows giving her a guard of honour

I'm lucky enough to work at Doncaster Airport where it is based so I get to see it quite often and get closer than most. They are a a great team that look after and maintain the Vulcan

Ah, you're luckier than most seeing her up close for her take offs and landings. I'm hoping to get down for the Vulcan Experience tour soon

Hi Guys

Some fantastic shots of the Vulcan there, i'm off to see her myself this Saturday at Old Sarum near Salisbury and i cannot wait as i have not seen one since the mid 80's. Any tips on catching some good images would be help full as i haven't done aircraft in flight before. I normally shoot raw but wonder if jpeg might help with continuous hi speed shooting, also i would guess spot metering to get the planes correctly exposed so their not silhouetted against the sky. I'll be shooting with a D7100 and Nikon 70-300. Do you use auto white balance, i'm not a fan of this and much prefer to set according to the conditions and if i shoot raw i can alter this afterwards.

Regards

You'll be good to go in RAW, you're right with Spot, and Auto WB is not everyone's taste, but can help you, but if you wanna set your own then do that. She's not an exceptionally fast aircraft, so you don't necessarily need the fast jet +1/1000 shutter speeds

Hi jay dean

Thanks for your comments & i'm pretty happy with how i'm going to set up. I'll use back button focus with single point AF-C and spot metering, white balance will be set to suit the conditions and standard picture control. I'll shoot raw anyway so i can change this after if not happy straight out of camera. I'll try 1/500th or less for prop planes and 1/1000th for fast jets at f8 to start with and see how i get on. Weather forecast is looking good and i can't wait to get there. :eagerness:
Hopefully have some images to post next week.

Cheers
Chris

Good stuff! You might find 1/500th just a tad high for prop planes and helo's. I tend to stick around the 1/160-1/320th mark for prop blur. I also use this speed for landings and take offs. Have a good 'un!

Hope to see her at Southport air show next weekend, she had a technical problem last week but hopefully will not impact her showing up at Southport

I have been lucky enough to see the Vulcan's fly since the 1970's as I grew up in Lincoln, very close to RAF Waddington. ButI didn't have a camera then. Now I live close to Robin Hood airport where XH558 is based. I last saw it fly last Saturday at the Scottish Airshow.
The first image is an approach to Robin Hood airport.
