The Ruins of the Variety Theater circa 1927

Earlier today, I went on the Cleveland Photography Society's field trip to the old Variety Theater that was build in Cleveland during the 1920's. It has been long abandoned and there is a current drive to restore the theater back to its original glory. People say the theater is haunted, but I don't believe in that stuff.....until now. When I processed the 2 frame pano, I noticed that there are definately 2 ghosts on the left side of the photo. I'm glad they didn't eat my brain (snack size). All were shot with a D800 and 24/1.4 lens. ISO 100 or 400 f1.4 with available light, and a shutter speed of 3 weeks.

The Cleveland Photographic Society is over 100 years old. I joined last year. This is the 3rd "field trip" I've gone on with the group. Very well organized and they open a lot of doors that are normally closed to the public. The theater is very dark. Very. The only lighting is what you see as bulbs. There were a few standing work lamps and that was it. The situation required the f1.4 for the available light. The Nikon 24/1.4 did an amazing job of sucking in every available kilowatt.

The only lights in this room are what you see in front of the stage.

A trick I learned today (you all probably know it already) was to use a flashlight to focus with. It was so dark that the camera could not focus. I had a flashlight and I shined it on the point I wanted to focus. That gave enough light for the camera to adjust. Worked really well. I just thought I'd share in case you hadn't known.

Look at the fifth photo in the first set above. You can see how dark the stage and seating area actually was.
