I got this Rainbow cloud while shooting a surfing contest (Ford Supergirl Pro) in Oceanside today.

Re: Post your Sundogs

I was told this is a rainbow cloud, never heard of either but did grab a few shots a while back. Here is one of them.

Yup, that's a rainbow cloud, not a sundog. We get lots of both where I am. Sundogs in the winter, rainbow clouds in the summer and early fall, mostly towards sunset.

Are you sure this isn't a sundog, too? It seems like there's two definitions depending upon where you look. But if that's correct and this is a rainbow cloud then I suspect my original post is a rainbow cloud too.

I saw a lot of sun dogs last winter. Never saw so many before. One was so bright I thought it was the sun. I never had my camera since, I was always working

Thanks WUD. I remember the day well. It was the first day shooting with my D5100 and the battery died before that occurred. The battery charge light went out and off I went. I was using live view since I couldn't see anything through the view finder. Luckily, I had my trusty Coolpix S3100 with me. Now, I have two batteries and I wait about a half hour after the charge light stops blinking before I remove them from the charger. Probably does do anything, but it makes me feel better.

Hope this isn't too late in the game.
I saw a fleck of color in the clouds this May as we drove through high desert of C. Oregon.

I came across this strange sight this morning. Clear skies, high barometric pressure and long-lasting vapour- or contrails led to this formation of ice crystals forming a short vertical rainbow. Never seen one before.
