Fantastic Fox Cubs

On Monday I was lucky enough to spot 2 fox cubs as they ran back into their earth (the name for a fox den in case anyone was wondering). So I went back on Tuesday morning and found a good spot close to the earth and downwind, where I could set up a makeshift hide with some camo netting, ready for me to go later that afternoon.
Thankfully I didn't have to wait long for the first cubs to appear, just 20 minutes or so as they ventured out of their holes just after 17:00, about the same time I'd seen them the day before. Despite being less than 20 yards away and occasionally less than 10 they were largely unaware of my presence, occasionally looking up in my direction when they heard my camera shutter but they quickly went back to play fighting with various parts of previous meals. I think there were 5 cubs in total but they were rarely all in sight at once.

Unfortunately the light was low and at iso 1600, the max I like to shoot with using my D7100, the shutter speed was too slow to capture any action shots but I did get some nice stills. The pictures though are just a bonus as the experience alone was well worth it. I will go back again, hopefully in better light and I will also take my wife as sharing this experience will make it all the better. If I'm very lucky the vixen might show up too but I think it will be much more of a challenge to get her on camera.

Here are a few of my shots.

I went back to the fox earth on Sunday evening with my wife. The cubs showed up again but not for as long this time. I took a few stills and this short video. You'll hear my wife taking some photos with my/her D3200 and Tamron 70-300mm, the VC is very noisy and the shutter nearly blows our cover (you may hear me saying "stop") but they didn't seem to take much notice.

It really was a great experience. I also found an abundant deer and hare population at a wind farm a couple of miles away, so I'm looking forward to going back there a lot this week.

How fricking close were you? I have a bunch of fox pup pics from 90 yards away with a DX, 800mm f5.6, and 1.6 tc that don't fill the frame like that.

I was generally between 10 and 20 meters away. With the way the woodland is, if I'd set up any further away I would never have had a clear shot.

I set up my camo netting downwind and thankfully it was quite a strong breeze which both masked by scent and sound. They did come within a few meters of me on a couple of occasions but I couldn't get a shot of this unfortunately.

I have a family I am watching but can't take a chance getting that close because if the family moved from the neighborhood, then they'd be at the mercy of the local coyotes. You're lucky to get those shots. You ought to borrow a 300 or 400 f2.8 to get your iso down.

I'd love to be able to borrow 300 or 400 f2.8 but I don't know anyone who's got one, certainly no one I know well enough to ask has one. I also have a local badger set but even at iso 6400 my shots are underexposed and noisy as hell. A D5 and 400 f2.8 would be a sweet combo but unless I ever start making decent money from photography they are out of the question. Hopefully I'll start selling a few prints soon, just need to get things set up and get some more potentially saleable images.

Another short video of these cubs. Excuse the poor quality of my filming, I rarely take videos and for the most part I forget that it's something my camera is capable of. I do want to start using it more though.

Challenge Team
Elliot, you have some very nice shots and videos. It is always fun when a plan comes together like this. You met the challenge for sure.

Thank you. I had no idea if they would even come out whilst I was there, let alone stick around. Sometimes you can plan all you want but you still need luck on your side, this time I got lucky.
