they could band them like they do ducks, then you could shot the goose to get the band back. This to me looks like a much nicer way to track water fowl. I do not think the goose is being harmed by the collar, just looks like it.

The bird doesn't look very happy. There must be a better way than this. I'm not educated in birding, but perhaps an Agency is overstudying migrations and needs to quit.

Does the BirdLife international website have anything on this?
You could ask about this there, I may consider that after research.

What is the purpose of these tags/collars, also would anyone like a collar like that around their neck?
It's the environmentalist going nuts. Bunch of ex hippies turned totalitarian environmentalist wackos. They want to tag, track everything that flies, crawls swims and runs.

So by harming the environment they think they are doing some good??? Maybe track and tag what they do would be better.

This has been going on for years. These big neck tags are meant to be seen from a distance so people that are studying the birds do not have to get close enough to see the tags and disturb them. Especially during nesting season. Or when they are migrating and flying high up.

The purpose is to let biologists collect data off the neck collar with a spotting scope. The alternative is leg banding and shooting them. Please give the biologist folks some slack.
