Boyer Chute NWR - Raptors

Took these today at Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Nebraska, was a horrible 5 mile hike. 30+ mph winds and 20* weather...

The eagles were chasing each other, dive bombing etc.

Just curious if this lens (55-300mm) is "soft" or if it is my settings. I know the distance between me and the birds doesn't help too. One day I'll get a 150-600...one day...

Had the sun positioned behind me for these too.

Thanks for looking and any input!

Not an easy answer on that lens,it works well within normal parameters you are taking it to the extreme here, using F8 instead of F5.6 could help with your results but to get the best from it you need a larger image.
