Another mulie, a 4 point buck this time

This one is a beauty and pretty young, it is probably only his second year. He was out in a field with a doe. They were maybe 25-30 yards away tops. They checked me out when I was setting up and then went back to grazing, apparently not feeling threatened at all. I actually had to clap my hands to get them to look up. I thought for sure that would cause them to bolt but they didn't. After about 15 minutes the doe just walked over to the buck and they just strolled off.

In hindsight I probably should have used fill flash but did not have them with me

divide by 2 for a western count (two point). Are the deer inside the town limits? (no hunting zone) usually they disappear very fast during hunting season.

Yes but Springerville AZ is pretty rural all the way around. This particular herd hangs out about 3/4 miles from the Safeway shopping center.

Very nice shots. One of these days I'm going to have to pick up an AIS lens just out of curiosity. Which one did you shoot this with?

I have the 600mm f/4 ED-IF AIS. It is a beast, at over 12 pounds, but it is sharp as a tack and built like a tank. It can be hand held, but you really need at least a monopod. This image was shot with the lens on my Slik U-212 tripod.

how much would arizona nick you for an out of state deer license?

Not an option at this point unfortunately. Elk, mulie and white tail are all by lottery only and the application deadline is LONG past. I can still get a bear tag but I am not really all that interested in that. I was REALLY looking forward to bagging a beautiful bull Elk!

Yep, AZ you have to put in for the area, species, etc in May-June for the following Oct, Nov, or Dec hunts. The hunts are usually for a week long period, again depending on species and area drawn for. For a non-resident the license and tag will run about $500 +/- for deer. Elk is more.

Fortunately for me, big game hunting with my 600mm f/4 "cannon" is open season, no bag limit and no license required! But some kind of orange is still recommended somewhere on your pwossin!!

This is a tighter crop of the image I took a couple of weeks back. I think it makes for a better "portrait" of this beautiful young buck. Right now the Mulies, along with the elk and white tails are kind of making themselves scarce with hunting season upon them.
