Ultra wide on a D7100

OK, shopping for an ultra wide zoom for my DX / D7100 to shoot concerts, etc.

Looking at the following and having a hard time with comparisons.

Tokina AT-X 11-20mm f/2.8 PRO DX $550
Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX-II 11-16mm f/2.8 $450

I've been searching the forums and 'The Google', looking for real world input here.

Thanks!
Joe

I've found I like to search for the lens specific flickr groups, viewing user images does more for me than stats. You'll probably find a group with thousands of pics for those lenses.

Joe, for landscapes i really like the 11-20. Not sure how it fairs against the 11-16 though. Let me know if you want some raws to check out.

I have the 11-16 for my D7100 and love it. The key to any wide angle lens is learning to shoot it correctly to control the distortion unless you want the distortion.

I heartily recommend the Sigma 8-16mm because of the rectalinear nature of the lens, but then I saw "for concerts" and need to add that at f4.5-5.6 it may not be bright enough for you. That said, I've shot more than a few shows with it and it has a great look to it.

Thanks Jake, sounds like that Sigma is a nice lens, I am looking for the f2.8 for indoor shows. Also looking at a Nikon 10.5mm if the price is right....

I can't speak to the 11-20, but love my 11-16. To my way of thinking, and of course I could be wrong, but the shorter the focal length range I would think the less optic distortions.

The 11-20 is Tokina's replacement for the 11-16, right? The 11-16 is awesome by all accounts, but I haven't heard as much (pro or con) on the 11-20.

I've had the 11-20 for a little while and happy with it optically Haven't done much low light stuff yet so can't really give feedback on that. There is a reasonable amount of lens distortion but you get that with most ultra-wides as I understand it. Am shooting D7100 too btw.

You can limit the amount of distortion you get by careful shooting. Keep the camera level both side to side and front to back. Also try to shoot square to the subject. If you do this you can pretty much get no noticeably distortion.

Like many others here, I have the 11-16 and it is a great lens. If the 11-20 is not worse in image quality, I'd go for it, just to have an extended zoom range. The 11-16 feels almost like a prime.

So, my camera shop of choice had a used Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 for $300 on their craigslist page. Such a great deal, but after 5 days (they didn't know where it was) of asking, they called today to let me know it was sold the day it was listed (11 days ago). The listing is still up BTW - They need some work in their craigslist department apparently :)

I just ordered a new Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 today via ebay. Should be here soon :)

You won't be disappointed with the 11-16, I have had mine for a few months now and love it. It takes a bit more thought to compose the shot than when using my 16-85, but it will give you some great shots when you get it right :)

I'm also in the market for a ultra wide for my D7100. Budget of up to £350ish.

Current front runner for me is Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 (which version DX or DXII? I don't need internal focus motor for D7100 but would be nice to have option of using AF on my D3200. Also is there much difference in IQ).
Very close if not equal in the running is Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5.
Also considering:
Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8
Tokina 12-28mm f/4 (I'm yet to read up about this one).
or any other suggestions you guys throw at me such as the Sigma 8-16mm or Nikkor options although those will most likely be above my budget.

My main purpose for this lens will be landscape photography as currently my options are limited to older kit 18-55mm which isn't great IQ wise or that wide or 35mm 1.8 which again isn't wide enough.
I might also like to try out astrophotography, for which I believe f/2.8 aperture might be useful over f/3.5 or f/4.
All input and suggestions welcomed!

or should I be looking for something like Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 for landscapes and more general purpose lens? I didn't find 18mm wide enough on my recent holiday when trying to photograph things like waterfalls so probably not but I always welcome other peoples thoughts and experience.

One thing to consider for landscapes is the depth of field. Here is an Island in front of my home. It is 7 miles from shore and about 20 miles long, rising probably 500-600 feet above sea level.

What I'm going to say won't really help......I have the Tokina 12-24 f4. I love it. I'd love to have either of those lens and you will be happy with either.
