Tokina makes a fine lens. I have a 12-24/4 and preferred it over the 11-16/2.8 for better reach. The f2.8 over the f4 wasn't important since I shot outdoors. The new 12-28/4 replaced the 12-24 and is supposed to be better. This 11-20/2.8 makes better sense than the 11-16/2.8, but I believe I'd prefer the 12-28/4. In any case, I like Tokina lenses.

May be the case for some, but to me it's not worth "upgrading" . As I look through all my shots with the 11-16, I hardly go above 12mm. For me an upgrade would be an 8-16mm or even an 8-12mm 2.8
As it is, sometimes the thing is way too sharp on my D7100. I may have to buy a backup D3100 just to tone down the sharpness of this monster.

I don't get it... I checked mine also... and most of mine are in the 11-13mm range... I don't see the extra 4mm as being worth anything... I pass...

I'd agree with that. Keeping me from getting too interested in this lens is that I want the option of being able to use any future lenses on FX bodies. I hope Tokina keeps developing those as well.

I wasn't suggesting that someone already owning an 11-16 "upgrade" to the 11-20. That doesn't make sense to me. But for someone in the market for a new ultra-wide zoom, the 11-20 or the 12-28 would be better choices than their predecessors.

I dont like it when a company releases incremental updates to a lens. to me it means the lens wasnt ready from the get go. it isnt fair to those as their resale goes down the drain.

reminds me of samsung and releasing a phone. month after month they release another one with updated chips and tweaks. but I dont have anything samsung so...

The price delta between the 11-16 and 11-20mm has me off a bit. I mean, the 11-16mm is ~$500USD, but the 11-20mm is expected to be in the $800USD range?

That would be me...I've been going back and fourth between the Nikon 12-24 f/4, the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, or the 12-28 f/4. My original plan was to stick with FX glass for my D7100 with the goal to one day move to a FX camera and be set...but plans change. The only FX lens I would consider would be the Tonkina 16-28 f2.8 but I am unsure if that would be wide enough for me right now. I want to do some landscape and long exposure waterfall/beach shots. It's looking more like the 12-24 or the new 11-20 would be the smart choice for now...

After a point I would really just stitch shots to keep the perspective not uber-distorted on the widest end of all of these. You just can't capture it ALL with just 1 snap and its as simple as that.

Maybe I wasn't clear, or maybe you took me literally...to simplify it for you I am looking for a lens that I can take landscape shots, OR long exposure shots...SUCH AS waterfalls OR beaches...is that better?

I like the altered perspective of wide angle lenses. It makes for some very dramatic and interesting photos. Stitching shots is cool, and has become much easier with the software available these days. I like that, too. I suggest there is room for both methods. :)

BTW, I'm hoping that the new lens will push the used prices lower on the 11-16. I've been kinda' wanting to pick one of these up for a while, now, and have been watching the used prices.

Hi, I just want some feedback for those who owns the Tokina 11-16 and Tamron 17-50 lenses. Do you see the need for the Tokina if you already have the Tamron? I am searching for some good reasons to buy it.

Regards

Good day,
I am looking at purchasing the Tokina ATX 11-20mm f2.8 Pro DX lens and would like to know from other users if this lens has a built-in auto focus motor and that it will work with cameras like the D5100. This camera lacks motor arrangement to drive auto-focus lenses.
Best regards

Welcome to our Nikonites family! I think the lens is so new yet, that nobody has one yet. But I believe it will likely have a built-in focus motor, to work with Nikon's like your D5100.:)

Hey Pete buddy, why not buy a great FX version wide angle lens for your D750 instead? ;)
