Tokina 11 - 16 or Sigma 10 - 20?

Been reading some of the threads in this area, the Sigma seems preferred, but based on some Amazon reviews, it seems the inconsistency between lenses is shocking (A lot of people saying their lenses did not focus well or has blurred spots etc). The Tokina seems to have less negative reviews, but also seems less popular, given the choice between the two, what would you go for? The Tokina is also more expensive than the Sigma.

Ye didnt notice you had a D7100, any other reviews? Wondering just how much of a difference the 10mm sigma vs 11mm tokina really makes for landscapes...

I have the sigma and love it. I looked at the Tokina but the size and weight made it less desirable for me. I think I got more range with the sigma than the Tokina...

Is the Sigma also a 77 filter thread? Do you have to use thin filters specifically to avoid vignetting or can you make do with normal thickness ones?

As you may have read all over the place-
Nikon 12-24
Tokina 11-16
Sigma 10-20
are the best wide angle lenses available for a DX body.

There's not really all that much difference between any of them except personal preference
Am sure you would be extremely happy with any one of them.

If you ask my personal opinion, i would probably choose the Nikon first & then the Tokina & then the Sigma :)

Well I'm sure the nikon is the best one, but the price is significantly higher than the other two... If there was a small difference in price I would go for nikon version, but its out of my budget right now...

Then it makes your life simpler!
Easier to make a choice between TWO than THREE!

I think if you try both the lenses, hold them & shoot a couple of pics, you'll realize which you prefer.
Decision made :)

I bought the Sigma 10-20 for my DX cameras for a few reasons:

1. I found a good deal on a Like New one from someone I trusted.
2. Sigma is the only non-Nikon brand of lenses I've ever used and all 3 of those Sigma's were excellent.
3. It has more range than the Tokina.
4. It's wider than the Tokina.
5. I don't really need 2.8 on a lens this wide. I do like 2.8 in the mid range so I have the Sigma 17-50 2.8.

Again, these are my reasons. You may have different needs and preferences.

Having said that, I haven't actually shot with the 10-20 yet so I can't say how it performs. I've only had it a couple of weeks and I haven't needed the wide angle for my DX much lately. I've been spending all my time shooting the D800. I suppose I should shot a few frames and determine if I want to keep it or not.

As to filters, yes, it takes 77mm. However, I don't think I'll be using them on this lens. I would typically use a polarizer for certain shots but those can cause issues with skies below 24mm or so.

I'll stay with my Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 That 2.8 comes in handy for those indoor shots, when I don't want to use a flash.I am SOooo pleased with this lens I wish I had gotten it sooner.Good Luck:)

the sigma is renowned for being rather soft in its image quality, the tokina is renowned for being rather sharp despite a more limited focal range.

There are 2 versions of the Sigma 10-20. There's a 10-20 f/4-5.6 and a newer 10-20 3.5. I did my reseach before buying and it seems the "improved" 3.5 was not improved. The reviews I read on the 4-5.6 were very good but the 3.5 reviews were not nearly as good. Here are a couple of reviews of the former:

Tokina here as well. Reasons why: sharp as a tack, awesome like a tank build quality, 2.8 is great for indoors or low light wide shots, 77mm so all my existing filters fit, oh and did I mention sharp as a tack!! ;) I've had 2. 1st one went for a salt water swim. It's that good a lens, I bought another the next day. Neither suffered any inconsistency in quality.
