Focus on Backlighting
Weekly Challenge: April 15 – April 22 (2012)

This challenge will give you an opportunity to focus primarily on your lighting and exposure control as well as creativity. Select a subject and use backlighting as your primary light source. No fill-in flash for this one, and no silhouettes (black with no detail). Anything else is fine, including reflectors. Put some thought into how the backlighting fits into your composition and mood of the photo. Experiment, and most of all, have fun!

These challenges are designed to help you grow in your photography skills and creativity, and also to have fun.
Be sure to visit the Weekly Challenge Rules & Guidelines for more information. This thread will be closed on April 22 (midnight EDT)...so get those photos in!

The Rules
1. Photos must be posted to the thread in order to be considered for the challenge.
2. Any photo submitted for a weekly challenge must be taken during the dates specified in the challenge thread and taken by you! Because not all EXIFdata can be verified, we will use the honor system here.
3. Challenges will be judged solely by the panel. Individual voting via post "likes" will be incorporated into the final selection of the winning photo.
4. Only one photo entry per member, for each challenge, unless otherwise indicated.
The Judging Criteria Twelve elements of a Merit Image

There will be no cash or prizes awarded for the Weekly Challenge, unless specifically noted by the site administrator. This is a member-run contest, and the purpose of the Weekly Challenge is to encourage member participation on the forums and to keep you taking pictures!

Any photo will be accepted for the challenge. Edited/straight out of the camera, it does not matter. You are left with complete freedom to do whatever genre of photography you wish to do, and your own interpretation of the challenge subject.

"the fall of man. . . "

hope this counts. . .i used a sb700 in commander mode. . .i used my left hand to cover the on board flash. . . as my first shots were filling in a bit and reflecting off the apples. . .its very minimal if any lighting coming from it. . .(if anyone feels this is not ok i can retract my submission. . .) PP was only exposure adjustment, blacks, recovery, and sharpening (no fill light adjustment was used). . .anyways, one of my pets. . .lol. . thanks. . .

"Backlit Leaf"

I wanted to use the back lighting of the sun to show the finer details of the leaf structure.

Enjoy

barbed wired.jpg
this i took from the inside of an old barn...my idea behind this shot, if you're familiar with the Saw movies, was that viewer would feel as if they were in a barbed wire trap and can't escape out the door that's right there, lol

This happened to be a backlight photo what I took last Sunday at backyard:

300mm f/8 1/500th of a second ISO500 handheld without flash, diffuser, or reflector... (I used to use flash fill-in though, but this one I forgot! ).

Decided not to wait for the last minute this week. It was a toss-up for me.

(The other woodpecker is here -don't like the OOF branch in the foreground)

Adding ExIF (not sure why this lost when the image is uploaded to the Gallery?)

I must admit I do love my flip screen. I was able to get in the grass with out actually getting down in it for this shot.
