Wanted: Cheap Prime telephoto

I am looking to buy something old, and affordable, 400 or 500 mm. Nikkor, Sigma, doesn't matter as long as the price is the correct and the optical condition is great.

PM with any offers!

Yes, probably anything will work, and AF is not big issue, but preferred. I had in mind one of the old Nikon 400mm f5.6 or a Sigma 500 APO (the macro one i.e.).

Maybe not useful information for you, but from experience the Sigma 500mm is not on a par with the Nikon 500mm. I am comparing the later Sigma 500mm DG version with the Nikon 500mm G one. I've heard that for IQ etc, the newer Nikons are no better than the older ones.

You could consider my chosen option (when it arrives) the new Nikon 300mm pf and 1.4,giving you 420mm f5.6 with VR in a small package,IQ is supposed to be extreamly good even with the 1.4.

The Nikon 300mm F4 AFS with a TC14 is the least cost option for the IQ you get. Now that the PF version with VR is there you may get the combination at a reasonable discount.

I can see where this is going to go.

Offer 1: Used Nikkor 500/4 G lens for $7900. No thanks, too expensive.
Offer 2: Old Sigma 500/8 reflex for $200. No thanks, poor image quality.
Offer 3: Beat up Nikon 500/4 AF-D for $4,000. No thanks, too beat up.
Offer 4: Good condition 500/4 AF-D for $5,000. No thanks, too expensive.
Offer 5: Tamron 200-500/5.6-6.3 for $800. No thanks, I'd rather have a Nikon lens.
Offer 6: Nikkor 400/4.5 Q for $800. Are you kidding? Did it come over on the Mayflower or what?
Offer 7: Nikkor 500/4 P for $2,200. Um, I think I'd rather have autofocus now.

At this point, someone has champagne taste with a beer budget.

Really, you have extreme clairvoiyance, given that I just haven't received/rejected any offer. Do you have an offer or something to suggest? If not just don't post bullshit...
