Anyone selling a 70-200mm f2.8 for cheap?

I believe that, if you want to go longer than the excellent Nikon 17-55/2.8, you'll have to shop 3rd party lenses for a quality action DX lens.

Thanks Ted, the reason why the guy recommended this is because I want to shoot indoor Volleyball games and they dont allow flash. Also, I can't get too close to the court, sometimes I'm 10 rows back in the bleachers....

You'll have to go third party and used if you want cheap (under $1000). If you're not concerned with VR, you might find a used Nikon 80-200 2.8 out there for $5-600.

With a DX camera you can use FX lenses without any issues. BUT look for one with built in auto-focus motor because I don't believe the 5200 has one (I have a 5100 and it doesn't). Without the motor in the lens it won't auto-focus - although manual focus will work well. I paid about $100 for an older 70-210 Nikkor and am happy with it but don't think it will auto-focus on a 5200.

I'd love to find the same lens so I can shoot indoor dog shows and agility trials. ;) BUT, thinking outside the box...
Until I can afford the 70-200, I'm using my 50 mm f/1.8G lens. Yes, I cannot zoom, but I end up cropping my shots when I'm doing post-processing.

Early on I had an 80-200/2.8 -- great bokeh but slow focus. Not sure it would be best for sports. The recommendation to look for a used Nikon 70-200 VRI is very good.

You need a fast lens for indoor volleyball, and while 2.8 is fast, it may not be fast enough.

Try any lens(like a 50mm or 85mm) at f2.8 to see if you can get the shutter speed and image quality that you want. You may find that f2.8 isn't fast enough. If so, then you won't have a lens that isn't really what you needed. If it is fast enough, then you can look for the 2.8 with confidence.
