Nikkor 55-300 VR just sent for repair

Just had to send my 55-300 for repair. I bought it in July 2011 and it seems that the last few times I've used it the image quality was degraded and through the viewfinder I noticed the image "jump" or "skip" while focusing. The rep at the dealer told me that the VR system was malfunctioning and that's what was causing the skipping.

So off it goes to Nikon Canada for repair, I'll be without it for 4-6 weeks.

Did anyone else have this kind of issue with Nikkor VR lenses? I'm curious to know if it is rare or common.

Just bought a AF-S VR DX 18-105mm and a AF-S VR DX 70-300mm. The 18-105 works great. However the 70-300 the image "jumps" or "skips" while focusing. Anyone know the cost of repair?

Hmmmm. Seems this is a problem with the new 70-300.

Read the lens manual, there seems to be an explanation for that behavior that is normal in some situations.

I wish the explanation in the manual was the solution. However the manual focus ring is also in op. Now the lens isn't focusing at all. All other lenses are working fine on my camera.

Does anyone have any online repair shop recommendation beside Nikon? I'm also checking on Monday to see if it is still under warranty. The previous owner is very willing to help. Thanks for any suggestions..

Maybe the electric contacts need cleaning? It just might be the lens itself that needs repair, but I'm just throwing out a suggestion. I really don't know why it would behave like that. Keep us posted on the eventual outcome, OK?

Excuse me hi-jacking your thread. I am new to Nikon. I've been using a Sony Alpha but switched last week. I now have a D5000 which is a great step up for me but the kit lens is obviously a bit short on the zoom. Is this lens (55-300 AF-S VR) good value? I am on a budget so really want to just buy one lens to compliment the kit lens as I start to build my kit.

I have the 55-300 VR lens and really like it. I use it at a motorcycle track taking fast moving pictures of bikes. Love this lens. Great value for the money. If I understand you correctly, you already have the 18-55VR kit lens, so this will definitely add to your kit, by covering you from 18mm to 300mm.

Thanks fotojack, it sounds like a good lens to add to my kit. For the money it seems to be pretty decent. I'm still finding my way around Nikon's equipment so it's good to get the input of those who know it.
