Sigma vs. Tamron F2.8

Hi all -

I'm looking for a F2.8 70-200 for my 7100. I'd love the Nikon but can't justify the cost so that leaves me with a Sigma or a Tamron.

It's mostly for photographing kids football games (some indoors), soccer games, horses, etc. So nothing professional - just need to capture action in low light places.

What would you go with? Sigma or Tamron?

Thanks for any input!!

Haven't tried the Sigma but I have the Tamron and I love it. Couldn't be happier with it. Very reliable and focuses quick.

I have an excellent copy of the Sigma, but I tried 3 different ones when choosing. This one was noticeably sharper than the other two I tested. Personally I'd go with a Tamron. It offers vibration reduction (which the Sigma lacks), and tests indicate it outperforms the Sigma for sharpness.

I can't speak to the Sigma, specifically, since I've not owned one but I've had the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD for some time now and it just about lives on my D750. Hands down my favorite lens, bar none. This lens shoots as sharp as some of my primes and has fantastic color and contrast. Just great lens all the way around.

a pro photog I freelance for has 2 70-200 VR2 sitting at home. 1-VR stopped working and had 5 years of hard use. the 2nd he bought had problems with the rubber grips falling apart and the AF was not consistent in continuous AF. so he bought the tamron. hes shocked more and more how amazing it is. superb lens. the focus breathing isnt bad as VR2 but not so great for extreme closeups, he says.

Oh wait...I misread the original post. This is about a 70-200mm f/2.8, not the 24-70mm that I was mentioning.

I bought the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 OS new but always felt like something was off with the images. I wound up trading it in for a new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. HUGE difference.

Go with the Tamron.

Thanks everyone! Definitely sounds, like the Tamron is a much better choice so I'll be looking into getting that one.

I appreciate the info!
