TCs on a newer version 80-400mm

I realize I'm probably better off with a heavily cropped image than a high pixel image with a tc on this lens but I am just wondering what you folks with a 80-400 (newer version) think about tcs.

I have a 1.4x but i have to admit, i'm not a great fan of it from an IQ point of view. I've used it on my 500mm f4, and was a little disappointed, but used it on my 70-200 f2.8 with better results.

I have two inexpensive kenko screw drive tcs I may play with. It's hard to buy a Nikon TC without a specific recommendation. The internet seems awefully quiet regarding tcs on the 80-400 or 200-500.

The kenko 1.4x seems to work ok. The 2.0 wouldn't even function with the lens. I need to find someone with nikon tcs to check it out.
