Tele converter?

Can anyone recommend a tele converter that will work with a Nikkor 55-300mm lens and D5500 camera? Something that will allow autofocus. I'm new to the world of DSLR's and am wanting to give the lens a bit more reach for wildlife. Are there any downsides to tele convertors?

I dont think Nikon TC's will, but using a TC with your lens will not give good results anyway. The best option is a longer lens really

I bought a Pro-Optics 2x TC. It works ok and will AF in bright light. Thinking back I would have saved for a longer lenses.

Not many lens where a TC will provide good performance (better than cropping). I'm not sure I'd use a TC on a zoom unless it was a fast one to avoid focus issues.

You can get a "heavily used" Nikkor 300mm f4 D lens from mpb.com for £324. https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/used-equi...nses/nikon-af-s-300mm-f-4-d-if-ed/sku-613296/ They also have better condition ones but the cost goes up. This lens (provided the optics are fine) will give much better IQ than any 300mm zooms and is a lens you could use a teleconverter with, generally a 1.4X TC is best giving 420mm f5.6.

I don't know if that is in your price range or if you'd be happy with a heavily used lens but it could be worth looking at.

You should also note that the 300mm f/4 D does not have a focus motor so if you are using a D3*** or D5*** body without a focus motor you won't have autofocus. It also has no VR so shooting handheld in low light situations could be problematic.
