I am so excited. I got my new lens today. Sold a bunch of stuff that was sitting around the house not getting used and raised enough for it. I can't wait to try it out. This is the biggest lens I have ever owned. The Nikon 200-500 ED VR. I look forward to sharing pictures with you all. There is one little downside to getting a new lens. My friends and family expect my pictures to get better. But I know it only lets me get closer shots of birds and not have to crop as much. But since this is almost twice the power of my lens, it is going to take some practice to get good with it. I am going out tomorrow. Even though the weather is not going to be so good. I can't wait to see pictures from it. Show me some of your pictures from your 200-500.

I'm looking forward to getting mine, hopefully on Friday. I'm sure you'll have as much fun with it as I expect to. I'm already using the Tamron 150-600 but it only took a few minutes trying out a 200-500 to convince me that it's a worthy upgrade.

The only down side to the 200-500 (and also the 150-600 Tamron) is that they take 95mm filters. Which tend to be expensive. A GOOD CPL can run you 250 to 400 bucks, if not more. Do keep a watch on ebay for deals on good used ones. I scored a B&W 95mm CPL on ebay for 50 bucks. It arrived today and it's perfect. That's a 400 dollar CPL these days.

Yeah I know the filters are expensive. But I never use filters. So that doesn't bother me. I know B&W UV is $100.00. If I was going to get one that would be it to protect it. But in 35 years of doing photography, I have never used a UV filter to protect lens. And I have never scratched one either. I won't put a cheap piece of glass in front of a expensive lens. Just doesn't make sense. But others that are less careful with their cameras, like my neighbor, should use one. She rarely puts her cap on. And doesn't always use the lens hood. I do both religiously. I look forward to seeing your photos with it.

I like the CPL filter already. It really helps to control glare off the ocean and improves color saturation. I photograph at the beach often enough that it was well worth the relatively low 50 dollar cost.

I will probably sell the Tamron to recoup about half the cost of the Nikon.
