First zoom telephoto lens for d7100

Hi,

I hope I am not posting this thread at the wrong place.
I have a question and hope if you can help me with an answer.

I have d7100 and 18-105mm on it and a year ago get a 35mm 1.8 prime. No I would like to purchase my first zoom lens (at least 200mm). I was considering 70-300mm because the money is the issue but still if a few bucks more will get me better IQ will definitely save and than go for it.

Can you recommend what would be good choice here: Nikon 18-200mm, 70-300mm, 18-300mm or something different?

I would generally would use it for distance photography such as street, people, maybe some sports and nature.

As you can see still I am not sure what to do here (read that 70-300 is the sharpest and 18-200 good in everything but not superb in all etc.) and really can not make up my mind so any help would be more than appreciate!
Thanks to all for answers in advance!

All the best!

If you plan to stay with DX I would throw the 55-300mm in the mix. I owned both the 70-300 and the 55-300. Everything I read said the 70-300 is better. But my side by side comparisons told me that the 55-300 held up well against it. In your scenario, the only reason I'd go for the 18-200 or the 18-300 is if I wanted to carry just one lens. Otherwise I'd look at the 70-300 or 55-300.

I can't say anything about the 55-300, but the 70-300mm VR is an excellent lens. Even at 300mm it is sharp. It is also an FX lens, so when you upgrade to an FX camera you'll have a great a lens for it to start with. If you do get the 70-300, make sure it's the VR version. The non VR version is cheap and not so good. (Was gonna say crap, but it may offend some):indecisiveness:

I have 18-300 mm and its great. I bought it because if I need to take photo of different distances and there is no need to change lenses if you need to take photo as soon as possible.

In general, zoom lenses with large variation between min and max focal lengths are not as sharp at the extreme ends. In this case, I would expect the 18-300mm lens to not be as sharp at 300mm as the 70-300mm lens would be. Neither will be as sharp as a 300mm prime (generally). The 70-300mm lens also has the benefit of being an FX lens as Blacktop mentioned, so while still 300mm at the max focal length, it's using the center of the lens to put the image on your D7100's DX sensor, so you're avoiding the common issue of lack of sharpness in the corners of an image. The 18-300mm is a DX lens, so you're using the entire lens to get the image onto the DX sensor.

For regular wildlife photography i use the nikon af 80-400 vr, but when it comes to general purpose photography i have the nikon 18-300. I prefer having the wide angle aspect and to be honest i have rarely used more then 200
