Telephoto for aviation and wildlife?

I currently shoot mainly landscape with the D800and have the 70-300VR for telephoto use when needed, find it pretty good ingood light, but I'm looking for a little more reach and quality for trying myhand a bit more seriously at aviation and wildlife photography.

I've thought about the new 300mm F4 but judging onshots I've taken so far I think I need the flexibility of a zoom.. what wouldpeople recommend, my budget isn't endless as it's not going to be used all thetime so the very high end lenses aren't on my list.

Appreciate any suggestions

Thanks

Simon

As usual, it may depend on how much you want to spend. The Tamron 150-600mm (a.k.a. Tamzooka) is very popular.
Sigma 150-500mm also not a bad choice and it is a little cheaper.
Nikon 400mm F/2.8 if you are sitting on a small gold mine.
Nikon 500mm F/4 for another high priced gem.

Or something cheap, get something I just picked up. The Tamron 200-400mm f/5.6 but that wouldn't give you much more reach than your current lens.

If you want a zoom, I think the Tamron 150-600 is very good. It's not quite as sharp as a prime, but it's close and a great deal for the money. I have heard great things about the new Sigma 150-600 lenses, as well, but have no personal experience.

Like you, I enjoy having a zoom, and there are shots each time I go out in the field that I get with the Tamron zoom that I would not have been able to frame in a long telephoto. Still, my Nikon 300mm f/4 with 1.4 TC is a little sharper and I love that lens.

Lee on here does great aviation shots with the Tamron 150-600,Wev does great bird shots with the same lens.so my suggestion is the Tamron,if weight is not a problem you could look at the Sigma 150-600 sport,it is heavy though.

The most suitable lens will depend on the wildlife subject, and how far away you shoot. If its birding and/or airshows, you can never have enough reach

Hi,

I think the Sigma 150-600 is a good choice.
If weight and money is not a problem, go for the Sport, otherwise go or the Contemporary.
The "C" is on my list, I'm going to try it as soon as possible.
