I just received my new lens Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD this afternoon, took a few quick shoot and I really really amazed with the VC.
I can take 1/20 handheld shoot without a tripod... usually my best handheld shoot is 1/60 without tripod.
It's really beyond my expectation.

Hello paul04, I also have the old Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di LD Macro 1 : 2 lens with no VC, I think the new VC version lens is much much better.
I'll try to give more review and sample pic later. I plan to have a trip to Bali next two weeks and I will bring my new lens to take some pic there. I will try to make a little review about this lens after my trip.

I have this lens and although I don't have much to compare it to, just a non VR kit 55-200, I've been very impressed with it. As you say the VC is especially good! I need to do more to work out its sweet spot but around 270mm at f/8 seems sharper than at 300mm wide open but that's what you'd expect anyway.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it! Btwwhat camera do you have?

Here's a recent shot with this lens.

Hello Elliot87
Beautiful shot
I have a new entry camera D3100 and D7100
Agreed with you, 270mm f8 is sharper than at 300mm, and the best is at f11.
Here is some shot with my tamron non vc handheld

Thanks @owleyes
You've got some great shots there too. I especially like the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Macaque shots and the last one is a cool image to get too with it looking at the statue.
I'm a little confused though as in your first post you say with the non VC tamron and the second it says 70-300 VS USD, did you mean VC USD? Just wanting to be sure what version you're using but whichever one it is it looks like its working well for you.

I will try f/11 with mine, should be more manageable now the light is improving here.

Edit: I've just scrolled up and realised it was you who started this thread and have already answered my question

While searching around for an upgrade to my 55-200 VR, I came across this thread. I hope no one minds if I glom on to it... but I'll ease the rudeness by first stating that B&H has it for $449, but there is a mail-in rebate for $100 until 6/30 for it, for a final price of $349 if you believe in rebates. Presumably the rebate is from Tamron so other places may have it, too. Anyhoo...

Is anyone using it for indoor shooting? I use my 55-200 for indoor shots at a hockey game, relatively low light and high speeds. With the D7000's good ISO features I can get some decent shots, but recently I bought a used lens that had noticeably better results (my wife: "You were on fire that night!"). Unfortunately that lens came apart on me and isn't worth repairing, so now I'm thinking about an upgrade to the 55-200 and wondering about this one.

The shots of the birds and other animals posted above are excellent, nice work. :)

Thanks!

I've been thinking of getting one of these.
I still have about $250 sitting as a credit at "The Camera Store"
And they sell this lens for $500. So I'm already half way there.

I do have a vintage sigma 100-300. I try and coax good images out of that old lens - I'm not good enough to do that most of the time.
I also have a vintage nikkor 70-210. I get good images from that old push-pull lens. I actually like it. But is is a little short. And no VC (or anything else invented since about 1990).

And I really really want a 70-200 F/2.8 really. But I don't want to spend the $1,500 needed to get one of those babies right now.

So - do I satisfy my lens lust and pick up this fine bit of glass?

Or do I wait for what I want, what I really really want. .....

I tempt myself to get this one by saying it won't really be redundant with the 2.8 70-200 when I get it.
And i say I can sell these older lenses .... (I've never sold a lens yet).

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Tell me again, how wonderful is this lens?

Does it give you great boekh when doing a portrait?

I can tell you the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 is worth everything you'll pay for it. It's "jaw-droppingly" good. It's smooth to operate and handles easily. Fabulous color, excellent bokeh and while I can't time the auto-focus it seems quite snappy to me. The Vibration Control seems to work very well from what I can tell. It's a big, fat, weighty lens but you simply will... not... care.

Lastly, while I don't know how you feel about it, I'll just tell you my "grey" copy barely broke the fourth digit. 42nd Street Photo is selling them for $1029 at the moment.

LMAO...... Now we see why Tamron was so quick to get the $50 rebate check to me, lol. They upped it to $100.

Yep, that's the one I want, I really really want.

I just added their 24-70 f/2.8 VC to my collection and yes it too is so good. I need it's companion.

And I'm in Canada so with exchange that $1029 should be $1,251.73 at today's exchange rates ( CDN $ .83 US) I think they look at the exchange rate and then double it

Currently the Tamron 70-200 2.8's in Canada is trending at about $1,500 with many stores selling for much more. Best price today on 'photoprice.ca" is Amazon.ca at $1,442 ( Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 SP Di VC USD for Nikon - Canada and Cross-Border Price Comparison - photoprice.ca )

Checked to see if importing would save me any - at the expense of easy warranty service - no it would cost me. At B&H I looked it up, converted to CDN and shipped to me it would be $1,914. Ouch.

So, that 70-300mm is still on my radar for the moment.

And I'm thinking it will be a great travel lens for a trip across Canada we have planned for later this year. .... still going hmmmmmmmmm

Well I'm now an official member of the Tramron 70-300 VC club. My latest efforts to satisfy my insatiable lens lust is this Tamron SP 70-300MM F/4-5.6 Di VC USD. Gosh that's a lot of letters.

When I've had a chance to give it a go for a while I'll post my first impressions.

What rebate?? Never heard of any rebates, just bought one this week?

Oh never mind

"This offer is valid only for purchases made within the U.S. Not applicable outside U.S. (Mexico and Canada are not applicable)"

Sucks to be us I guess
