First Air Show With My New D810 & Sigma 150-600mm Sports Lens.

Last Saturday I went to my first air show, it was in Avalon Australia weather was mainly overcast with the odd light shower of rain so high ISO was the order of the day and used group auto focus.

I found even in this poor weather condition the Sigma focused fast and was sharp at 150mm and 600mm.

The attracted photo's are not that exciting due to the grey sky's and I have never taken a photo of moving plane before, I must take my hat off to the experts as it was hard work trying to frame that dame plane.

Cheers

They look good to me and it looks like the combo works well.Did you use a monopod or handhold (a heavy load to try and follow focus with)?

Hi Iansky

Nope no monopod, just handheld but just after around 400 shots the Sigma felt real heavy by the end of the day.

As I was waving the lens all over the place I think a monopod would just add more weight, as it was my carry speed strap supported the camera and lens weight well when I wasn't shooting.

Nice shots; very nice shots. It looks like you know how to handle that rig well.

A few fellows I flew with a time ago went to the Avalon Air Show in 1999 (I believe), and they were very impressed with the people there, both running the show and attending the show. They got to do a bit of sight-seeing while they were there and had a very enjoyable experience with that as well. (Crews always wanted to attend overseas airshows as it gave them opportunities to travel we normally didn't get, as well as the opportunity to meet new people. As far as these went, shows in Australia were usually wanted the most due to the great hospitality they encountered there.)

One of the crew was retiring shortly after they returned and brought back over thirty cases of Victoria Bitter for his party. We took a photo of him and all of it stacked up by the airplane and framed the photo and his US Customs declaration form to present to him as a gift. Thanks for conjuring up the memory. :D
