New Sigma 24-105mm f4

I really like the idea of this as a walkaround/grab and go lens. Right now I have the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5, which is essentially the same things for the first 3/4 of the zoom range. I have a 70-200mm f4 and a 105mm f2.8 (plus other f1.8 primes), so it's not like I'm missing anything within the range. That said, the new Sigma lenses have been very sweet, and with the ability to ultra fine tune their AF with the optional USB dock it could be tempting at a given price point (I'd love to see $849). I may need to rent or at least give it a good trial just to compare things like bokeh and sharpness against the Nikon I have (which I really have no complaints about). It's going to be a question of whether or not I want to spend that much for a walkaround lens.

If the range trade off is for better IQ, it will be a winner. I was able to fine tune my 35 1.4 with my dock which eliminated the need for any in camera compensation. The dock allows for 4 points of tuning as opposed to only one catch-all setting in the camera body.

I've never fine tuned any lens... So pardon my ignorance with this question. What is the 4 point dock you're talking about?

I had not either until I got this new sigma. There is auto-focus fine tuning in-camera in the D600 which allows you to compensate for front/backfocusing of lenses. If your lens does not render sharp results the auto-focus may need fine tuning to make it spot on. You are essentially adjusting the body to compensate for a lens issue. This is true of many lenses including nikon. Sigma's new lenses have updateable firmware (like a camera body) to change performance characteristics (like focus speed on their sport lenses). The dock is plugged into your computer and mounted on the lens. You can then adjust multiple focus point on the lens and correct it to the conditions of your camera body focusing. This is more effective than a blanket adjustment in the body.

I saw something recently about their discontinuing it. As with the D600 kits two years ago, my understanding is that Nikon 24-120mm f4's being sold at a $600 discount with the D750 are getting turned around unused at about $100-200 more ($700-800) on Craigslist, which will save you $400 of a new one. Great lens with a little more reach.

I have seen quite a few primarily on Boston Craigslist recently....priced as you say and unused.
