Going to give sports a try

I've got the opportunity to try making photos of minor league pro basketball and ice hockey. For basketball, I will be at the baseline and I'm going to try my 24-120mm f/4. For ice hockey, I will be on the second level shooting over the glass. I will be using a Tamron 70-300mm F/4-5.6. The glass will be attached to a D750.

I've been reading what I can on sports photography, but figured I would ask here to get some real life advice. Will these lenses work OK for me? Tips on settings, etc. would be appreciated.

TIA,

Dennis

I'm going to say that the Tamron is going to be a bit slow for you, especially at the long end. However, i am sure the 750 will be able to handle high ISO pretty well, which you will most likely use to get some high shutter speeds. If you can, perhaps rent a f/2.8 lens. Best of luck.

I have the Tamron 70-300 and shoot sports. This lens is not fast enough. You really want, more a need, the 70-200 f/2.8 for it's speed. I would also suggest an Expodisc for white balancing in the arena - will make life much easier.

Again, I'm not saying you couldn't do it, but life will be mo-better with the right equipment.

Congratulations on the opportunity.

If your stuck with the Tamron i will ask how high have you pushed the iso on the 750 because you can go really high,it will not help you get focus lock but you have a great camera for high iso and low light focus.

With that glass on a hockey rink or school gym, prepare to crank that ISO.
Fill the frame with action. Try to get the ball/puck in the frame for most shots.

Thanks for the advice. I've been mopey enough around the house that the wife offered to go in on a 70-200mm f/2.8 as a Valentines gift. I'm going to go with the Tamron. They have two rebates I can collect on.

Excellent choice. I shoot youth sports with the Tamron VR with my D7100, your D750 will do a great job with that glass :)

Nothing to critique. I say that because sports is something we can't pose and the best we can do is try to be in the right spot at the right moment. Looks great.

They all look a little soft to me.
Just run a unsharp mask is ps. But you may also want to bump up your camera sharpness.
Settings for unsharp mask
ammount 112%
Radius 0.9
Threshold 0
I just ran unsharp mask on your pic look at the difference. Ill take pic down if you want.
