Just wanted to let myself know I was committed to this. ;) About to head out on a New Year's sales day with the wife, so perhaps I'll stumble across a shot or two for day 1! ;) Stay tuned!

Except... in my early morning haze (LOL, long night), I failed to get the apostrophe in Pretzel's. Maybe a kind supermod will fix that in my thread title? If not, I guess it won't kill me, but my OCD sense is tingling!!!

Wish you and of course everybody else luck in committing to a 365. To some it may not sound like much, just a photo a day. I have done it elsewhere and it is fun but also work. I am going to continue to stick to "pert near" and hope for more.

Done . . . service with a smile! Love the title, too! Good luck!

Day 1

Well... was really hoping to post something utterly incredible today to start the 365, but the wife and the weather had different plans. Apparently, one of the big department stores here, Dillards, has a HUGE New Year's Day sale, so guess where we went? I was going to get a shot of the mayhem inside, but there were SO MANY PEOPLE, lots of jostling and bumping, etc... I opted to NOT get the camera out. I did get a shot of the parking lot, though, to give you a sense of all of the nuts (I guess my wife and I fit the bill there, huh) that were willing to stampede the store on the holiday. It was the same scene in any direction. The good news is: the wife got some amazing prices on quite a few articles of clothing. I, on the other hand, got free lunch and a healthy walk around the mall (or two) while she shopped. ;)

Then, we went to scope out a potential shoot site from the top of one of the local parking garages. It's only 4 or 5 levels, but it's right in the heart of midtown, so it doesn't take much to get above it all. We have another rain/snow storm blowing in this evening, so the visibility was horrible, but I did take a couple of shots of the downtown skyline just as a tester. The first shot shows ya how hazy it was, and the 2nd was my 5 minute dabbling to clean it up (darn cell phone tower got in the way too). I'll go back on a clear day and see what I can come up with, and I'm really looking forward to trying a night shot or two. Also, as it's not a heavily used garage, there were classic spots for the "Car in Parking Garage" type of shots. Might have to get the bike and/or Camaro out there soon and play around.

Any hints on clearing up the haze on a shot like this that might net better results?

Also, my SB-700 should be delivered tomorrow, so I should start filling the thread with all sorts of crappy attempts to learn how to use it properly! ;) w00t!!

You asked about what to do about haze... Without opening a can of worms (because some people have very strong opinions about filters), what about using a UV or haze filter on the lens? Such filters are designed for just that purpose.

I've heard of UV filters before, but didn't know they worked to lessen haze. 1st I've heard of a haze filter, though, so I looked 'em up and they pretty much seem like the same thing. Now I know!

Guess that's a pretty inexpensive addition to add to the "short" list, but even still, almost every spare penny will be going to the D7000/7100 fund. :)

UV/haze, pretty much the same thing. They help to filter out some of the blue light that bounces off the water droplets that are causing the haze.

Day 2

I really thought today's pic would be me testing the new speedlight out, but instead... we had an AMAZINGLY clear night, and I just happened to be coming home at the right moment to spot the rarely seen new moon.

This shot was actually much more challenging than I thought it might be, as I was shooting on a whim instead of thinking ahead, but it didn't take me long to figure it out. Even though I tried a couple of tripod shots (with the VR off) at home, I still got my best shot handheld with the VR on as I left the lot at work.

It's hard to see, probably won't be sized right here, but I present: New Moon (the non-Twilight version)
D3100, ISO 1600, f5.6, 1/320 with my 70-300mm VR at 300mm. Cropped down, of course.

Wonderful moon shot. I have never been able to shoot the moon with a tripod but I do get good results handheld.
