Hey guys,

had a go with this lens on my D7000 and was really impressed, so much so that I bought the lens to replace my 50 mm f1.8D , just found the images better all round, just shows better quality glass is worth it!!

is nice that its a full frame lens so can use it when I eventually go and buy a full frame camera (please don't ask when that is!!)

Hi pat,

the 50mm 1.8 is excellent , had it for 18 months and loved it (click my Flickr link, pictures with bokeh taken with 50mm 1.8D). The 50mm 1.4 G is just a bit nicer all around but I think you will enjoy the 1.8 a lot.

I just got the 50 1.8 G which is fantastic also and budget friendly. These primes are amazing, I may replace all my zooms with primes.

Thanks for the added info... At this point, that looks to be my plan. I will check your Flickr link when I get home, it is blocked here at work. Again, Thanks!

Can you elaborate the differences in IQ all around?

I'm looking to upgrade from 50mm 1.8D to 50mm 1.4G as well, but looking at reviews from Thatnikonguy and digitalrevtv - I don't know if it's truly worth it.

I actually considered changing from D to G, but the pros become negligible when I'm looking for bokeh at that focal range...

I was in the market for a 50mm lens and chose the f/1.8G based on this very detailed review. (see HERE). It clearly shows the 1.8G is the sharpest of all the lenses in this class and the bokeh is great. Sharpness was my main driver for this lens but others may be looking for other attributes so the 1/8G may not be the perfect lens for you but I absolutely love it. And at 1/2 the price of the 1.4 was just icing on the cake!

that site is a decent reference site, goes into a bit more detail, without so much opinion. Sounds like the G lens is a winner, but, I am kinda sad to have the motor in the lens now, due to the increased size/bulk. I really like the small form factor of the older primes because you could literaly throw them into spare side cargo pants pockets. I think the G crosses the boundary as being too large and will require belt pouch bags, or back pack lens holders.

I have all different types of 50 mm (not this one, but 1.2, 1.4 manual and auto, and 1.8 manual, and auto, along with the 2.0. each have strengths and weakness. but in almost all cases, the sharpness and results is more a result of camera technique and resolving ability of my cameras.

I do really like nine blade aperatures with rounded edges (50 mm 1.2) and wish we would see more lens with that type of design.

The 501.8 G is my first prime, working on the 28mm 1.8G next!

The 28mm is an awesome lens, you'll really be impressed with its performance. But also consider putting the 85mm f/1.8G, on an FX body it really shines like no other prime lens can and may well be my favorite prime of them all.

My goal for the balance of the year is the 1.8G set of 28, 50 and 85. Next year I will add the 16-35 unless a new UW prime comes out.

Now don't you guys forget the 85 1.4 Samyang(Rokinon-Vivitar). This lens is a bargain and it's very sharp with nice bokeh. Not auto-focus though… But hey, for 400$.

I have the afs 50/1.8D and the 35/1.2D. Love them both. I also have manual 24mm vivitar, nikor 28mm/3.5 and 50mm/1.4 (non ai) The manual ones I use on my 3100. Also I got lucky. The three manuals were given to me.

its a bit sharper, feels quicker to focus, silent focus (AF-s, compared to my 1.8D), it's slightly faster being f/1.4 and the bokeh is a bit smoother. All round improved IQ
