I've never had a good time with a fixed 75 equivalent on DX. Might even say that a 20 or 24 would be even better. You can always crop or step in, but not always step back.

I shoot with the D7100 and have decided I need a fast prime for general use. Do I go with the 35mm or the 50mm? And Why

35mm would be close to a “normal lens” for that camera. That'd probably be the better of the two, unless you expect to routinely want a narrower angle of view more often that a “normal” angle of view.

The 35mm. The widest FoV can always deliver the same shot as a narrower but not the other way around. The 35mm can take 50mm shots by stepping in or cutting in post.

Also; for some reason that is beyond me the 35mm seem to be better performers than the 50mm lenses.

Having used the 50mm, and if I had a choice, I would pick the 35mm,
I am taking more landscape pictures, and the 35mm will get a little more into the frame.

If you can only get one, then the 35mm would be what I would recommend. Like the others have said it's more versatile and a 50mm eguivalent on your Nikon as you already know my friend. As great as your shots often are, I would suggest you try to eventually get both, because you could rock both lenses buddy! :)

I like them both. I had the 50 out today and had fun with it. But more often then not. I'll have the 35 on. Especially on my 3200 for obvious reasons.

I have been leaning toward the 35mm so this just seals the deal. Now to go muy one. This one is very reasonably priced at $200 for new AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. Anyone have this one and how is the quality?

I have both, and they both serve a purpose. Don, the 35 f/1.8 G is a great lens. You'll be very happy with this one. Very sharp.

I owned both, wasn't crazy about either. Even the 35 is a bit narrow on Dx. I really loved the Nikon 28mm 1.8 and it only costs 3 times as much!

Yup, currently own the 35mm and the 50mm f/1.8 primes, and on the D7100 I just don't find myself comfortable with the tighter FOV on the 50. If anything, I'd actually like something even just a little wider, like 24mm on the 7100.

Just me though.

While I found the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G to be a good lens on the D7100, I found the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM "Art" lens to be absolute perfection. That extra 5mm made all the difference. Well that and the Sigma is sharper, delivers better contrast and a gives me a fraction of the chromatic aberration of the Nikon 35mm. The Sigma costs more but there was never any doubt the Sigma was the better lens. Nikon "G" lenses have that cheap, plastic-y feel to them I hate, while Sigma's feel like tiny tanks.

Still, I'd take either before putting a 50mm on a DX body... That just never worked out for me.
