Tamron 90mm f/2/8 macro

I purchased this lens for my d5300. I know that it will not autofocus in my camera. I am fine with this - it will have a steeper learning curve, but in the long run I think that learning to use it manually will be to my benefit.

To my detriment, in these early days I am somewhat struggling with it. I can set the camera to auto mode and focus the lens and take a picture, but that is hardly scratching the surface and I wonder what resources might be available to help me specifically get the most out of this combo, and understand what settings will work best and why.

Will I not be able to set the aperture on this lens with my camera? If I have the aperture set to anything higher than the lowest stop, the camera wont take a photograph and the screen just tells me to set the lens to the lowest stop.

I like the lens, and reading up on it before I bought it all I saw were generally positive remarks, so I just want to make sure I am getting the most out of it.

Are you changing the Aperture via camera or lens? There are specific macro threads on this forum that we have started that cover this lens. I for one use it and am happy with it. Do a search for 'Macro' and start there.

I was just adjusting the aperture ring on the lens, I just assumed I couldn't do it on the camera because it wont autofocus.

I will certainly do a search, thanks for the tip. This lens + a d5300 is such a specific combo, I assumed it would be too anomalous to search for, but I should have done it anyway.

Not sure about this but if its an older nikon fit lens,AI or AIS you may not be able to do it in camera, you need to confirm the exact model lens you have, there have been a few Tamron 90mm and they will each behave differently on your camera.

Its a Tamron SP 272E 90mm f/2.8 AF Di, Model # AF272NII-700
Thats the one I use. Edit: Actually thinking about it mine does not have an aperture ring hmmmm, you may just have to try in camera. If it works great.

Edit again: looking at photos of my lens apparently it does have an aperture ring lol
