Capture NX-D file size help.

I shoot RAW and do my post processing in capture NX-D.

I then convert the file from RAW to JPEG and the resulting image will come out at a staggering 3-4MB in size.

So as the file is too big I use other software to convert it to a smaller more manageable 200-400 KB size.

Is there anything I am not doing or doing wrong that will allow me to convert the file in one go to a KB size?

When exporting raw files NX-D allows you to specify output file type (.JPG, .TIFF, etc.), as well as image-size, all in one dialog box. What you plan on using the image for will determine the output size. For posting online, for instance, something around 1,000 pixels is fine.

There are two methods

1) Increase the compression (decreases the quality). When you convert choose the quality of jpeg file - for smaller files choose "Maximum Compression"

2) Reduce the number of pixels in the image. For example my D3300 has 24MP - 6000x4000 pixels. Most monitors support HD (1920x1080). So the original resolution is an overkill. What most of the sides recommend is to reduce the image to 1000 to 2000 pixels on the long side. While converting choose the option to limit the long edge to say 1000 pixels, jpeg quality to "Excellent" and you will have small files.

Guidelines to adding a photo to your post.

1. Resize photo to 1000px on the long side.
2. Resolution set to 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch)

These guidelines will be good for viewing on a computer but will not be good for printing. This will help safeguard your copyright.
