Downloading NEF from D7000

For a few years I've been using a D7000 with a SanDisk Ultra card, CaptureNX2,and ViewNX2. No problems. Now I can open NEF photos made in the past, no problem. But I have a new problem -- Yesterday I shot 8 photos in NEF, camera set to RAW only, then downloaded with ViewNX2. I could see the 8 NEFs along with the previous NEFs recorded on the card. I was able to enlarge each individual to full size. Then I shifted the 15 NEFs to CaptureNX2 for editing. To my surprise, I was unable to open any of the 15 NEFs on the card in NX2. I noticed that the photos have about 20 MB while in ViewNX2, but in CaptureNX2 they all have 0 Byts. Where did the photos disappear? There is a message offered to me saying that I cannot load the file. Not helpful.

I used a second SD card for two series of shots: first camera set to RAW only, second set to RAW + JPEG. In both cases NEF and JPEGs appeared in ViewNX2 as they should. But only JPEGs transferred properly to CaptureNX2 for editing. NEFs would not transfer and open as before.

Any suggestions as to what I should do about missing NEFs? Many thanks.

Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!

Since ViewNX2 and CaptureNX2 are reporting different file sizes for the same images, what does the OS report the file size to be? Are you trying to edit the images while they are still on the SD card, or have the NEF files been copied to your computer's hard drive?

Instead of using software, try using OS for transferring the image files. I use windows 7 and transfer the files using Explorer.

The problem with using software to transfer the data is that at times the data may get corrupted if the software does not recognize the version, with OS it is simple file transfer.

I transferred 13 NEFS from SD card to an external HDrive. I can open them using ViewNX2 but not CaptureNX2. Procedures I have used in the past are not working. Thanks for responses.

If I am not wrong Capture NX2 has been discontinued, hence would not recognize NEF from newer bodies, View NXi and NX-D will.

My D7000 is several years old. The software is on disk which came with the camera. Thus, I would expect my photo processing would be beyond the influence of Nikon. However.....

In desperation, I downloaded Capture-D and View-i . All is well . I can process my NEFs. I wish I understood what is happening.

Why a software stops working (especially partially) is a thing that vexes every one, including the software engineers.

Your case is strange as the software which worked at one time has no reason to stop, as long as it is installed on the original OS. The only reason I can think of is that the Software stopped working after upgrading the OS. That happens at times, especially if the support has stopped. Mostly it has to do with various drivers involved. Any way now you are able to proceed with NX-D and NX-i.

Maybe WIN7 changed in some way that I'm not aware. Anyway, I looked at new versions of View and and Capture. Shocking!! The old versions were relatively simple and instruction books from Amazon.com are clear and uncomplicated. I may as well dump the new versions and begin again with Lightroom and PS.

I had an issue a while back with View NX2 suddenly not working properly when dealing with RAW. Then for some unknown reason, after a short time and a shut-down or two of the desktop, it starting working again. Now, it will sometimes stop working correctly but closing the program, waiting a short time, and re-opening it cures the problem.
For downloading pictures to the computer, I use a card reader and copy the files to whatever folder I have created on the computer. The only recent issue I encountered with getting pictures loaded to the computer turned out to be a problem with the usb cord for the reader. Ordered new reader and cord since both had some age on them.
I shoot raw to card one and jpeg to card 2.

Thanks for info. I use card reader. Today I shot a scene RAW on card one and JPEG on card 2. Old Capture would not open RAW (NEF), but would open JPEG on card 2. I saved JPEG to NEF. Old Capture opened NEF derived from JPEG. New View and Capture worked as they should. This may remain one of those mysteries of life.
