I have had a young lady ask me to take photos of her to build a portfolio. She had seen my portrait and wedding photos via my son which she liked, so contacted me. I have never done this kind of work so am asking for help and advice please.

Do what you have done previously as this is what she is after, if you look too much into this you will suffer. Best to do what you know ;). This is the trick with photography, people hire you or are attracted to you in your style of work. So do not change that but use it to your advantage.

Add in the release 'Time for photos' hence she is getting any photos for her time. And yes as Blade says get her to sign a release.

All set to do the shoot at a discounted price as have not done this before and some supposed pro has offered to do it for free. What is the point

This specific realm is still a great mystery to me as far as who-gets-paid goes. You need a model for shots, model needs you for shots. Aside from the portfolio stage, what's the point of hiring models as a photographer?

In this case, she needs your help, so all sounds swell.

This was for a portfolio, but agree if the shots are for me then I don't get paid but perhaps she does. A friend of mine who now sells photos for thousands never paid the models. He always promised that if they did sell then they would receive a royalty which he now pays them. Win win situation

This is his site. Beyond photography now art. He NEVER uses flash only natural light which he describes as a liquid that he can bend and change using mirrors etc.

I'm confused...

Does this woman want YOU, specifically, to photograph her; or does she simply want professional-grade photos regardless of who takes them? It sounds like she came to you because she's seen your work and liked what she saw. If that's the case, what's up with this Professional you speak of and where did he come from? It sounds like he's trying to steal your client by offering to do the job for free but maybe I'm not understanding what's going on here.

You are right, in that she had seen my work and liked it and came to me. Apparently she was talking to a friend the day before she was to come and her friend said that she knew another photographer and the friend rang him for her. He said straight away that he would do the work for free.

Okay, now it's all making sense... Third parties got involved and now everything is all screwed up. Be that as it may, this woman needs to make up her mind who is doing this thing, is that the long and short of it now?

If this were me, I'd simply tell this woman what your terms are for the shoot and leave it at that. It sounds to me like your work is speaking for you. She's seen it, she been impressed by it enough to contact you to get it, now she needs to agree to your terms.

If she doesn't like your terms, or if for whatever reason she wants this other guy to do the shoot fine, I'd let her go. I'm not a professional photographer but I have been in business for myself and I never haggled with potential clients.

As far as I am concerned she can go to this guy, I am just pi55ed that a) the photographer knowingly pinched my client and b) by offering to do it for free. I wouldnt mind if she had got quotes and I lost out. Unknown to me she had approached 2 other studios and found them as expensive but the main reason ref the financial side she had chosen me, was that I offered she pay in parts as at the moment outside work is too cold and wet.

I'm right there with you... On both counts.

The other photographer may not have a clue you were involved and for any number of reasons agreed to do it for free.

The other guy may not exist either.

Make sure you get a her to sign a release. If found out the hard way and had issue when trying to use the images from my first "free" wedding. Trying to build a portfolio is difficult if you don't have images that you have the rights to use.

Walk away from this one, it seems she is fishing for the best deal.

I agree with the others, if she liked your images and approached you then rightly I would suspect she wants you to take the images, having read about her approaching other studios / photographers I suspect cost is the majot consideration - shame.

I would also have a polite word with the 3rd party who approached another photographer as that and the other photographers attitude is unprofessional - not good!
