What about frames?

When you want to frame a photo, do you buy the frame at the time you have the photo custom enlarged? Use a poster frame? Custom wood frame? Frame your own? Photo interchangeable frame? Does one need to take out a mortgage?

That's what I thought.

Honestly, I wasn't trying to be a smartass. Everything you mentioned as a condition depends on the image, the size, the location and or the color of the room.

I prefer to make my frames. Since I can cut mats and glass, odd sizes hold no mystery for me. Making an odd size frame is the same as a standard.

Custom size frames cost a fortune. When I know I want to frame something I try my dead level best to print it in a standard size. Go to your local framing store or hobby lobby type store and see what they carry and the sizes. Shoot for that when possible.

I guess I should ask if you are going to go to a custom framing shop or not. If so, try to decide before hand how much wall space you want to cover. An 8x10 photo matted with 2" around each side and a frame that is about an inch on all sides makes the overall picture about 12x14. Everything, however, expands as the print gets larger. The larger the print, the more size is needed on each side of the mat and frame. It's really a issue of balance.

Print rough drafts in the most common sizes and take them with you to see how they will look in different size frames. Some shots will look better small, others scream to be enlarged.

My 1.414 cents worth.

I try to print in standard sizes, I prefer a basic black frame without a mat. Cost is low and I feel a clean black edge against a photo makes it stand out the most. Rarely spend over $10 on a frame. I also prefer to go without the glass to avoid reflections.

I also print in standard sizes and get basic frames with just a thin black edge. I get them at Micheal's when they are on sale. They are about $8 regular price. I put them up with 3M velcro so I can easily take them down and swap pics out.

I put up frames in groups of 5 with the edges touching each other in different patterns on the walls. For me it's about the image not the frame (and I used to be a professional picture framer as my job all through college).

I print the image with about 2 inches of white space around each side so it has the same feel as having a mat.

There's a place I buy my Frames from in western Sydney...$15 for a wooden frame or black [20x16] with glass and mat cut to suit witch I think is very cheap....They import from China, I'm sure there would be similar suppliers where you folk live..

I go round the secondhand shops and buy cheap wood frames, sometimes with old prints in them. Then spray them mat black. Works well for me.
