Raw file help please.

Hello everyone.
I brought two years ago, a D3100, my first digital camera, I shot in Jpeg/Raw.
Six week ago, I upgraded to a D5300, again, shootig in Jpeg/Raw.
I have noticed that the RAW file, when opened up, look really grainy and pale, yet the ones that were shot using the D3100 were perfect.
Am I doing something wrong, as the settings are set the same.
I have added a pictue to show you.
Thank you.
Alan

I'm assuming I'm looking at a JPEG and unedited RAW of the same photo. I suspect that you have the camera profile set to Vivid in the camera and whatever you're importing into (Lightroom?) has a different profile set - maybe a Flat profile of sorts. You may also have High ISO NR turned on which will be applied to the JPEG but not the RAW file.

A little more information and available EXIF data would help sort some of this out.

My browser plugin is giving me paint.net 4.0.9 for the software used on the 2nd image. I'm not familiar with that at all, but nef files change a bit with each camera model. You might be needing an update or different software. Its possible this software worked fine for your old camera but not the new. But as far as I know, only Nikon software displays an image with the camera settings applied. Raw images generally do look bland before processing with non-Nikon software. So with that in mind, I will guess that this software was not really showing you the true raw with the d3100, but rather showing you the embedded jpg.

Thank you both for responding to my question.
I edit in Paint.net, never had a problem with it on the D3100, but do with the D5300.
I have uloaded the Nikon Softwear, and you can see it OK, But I would like to carry on using Paint.net.
