Another "What to get" thread...

Mods if this is in the wrong place, my apologies.

We've been thinking about getting my stepson a basic cheap camera...he's 14, has autism, and I don't want to spend over $150, but want to get him something easy to use, but worthy of a decent pic. There were a couple of cheaper Sony's I glanced at earlier today for less than $100...the w800, and w880 or something. He said he'd like something with video capability as well.

Today was his first time with me at the bird sanctuary. I grabbed him a couple of cheapie disposables to mess with. I'm curious to see what he did with them.

Any thoughts and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

That's a tight budget but the Nikon Coolpix L340 fits the bill. Great little shooter that goes for right about $150.

my son Ryan has Autism also, he uses a Nikon L160 (i think) and a fuji (his sisters), now he does go thru phases with it, but he is only 7, he is well chuffed when he gets a shot, i used to keep a thread for him on here but i have neglected keeping it up, just downloaded 350 odd pics from it the other day, i need to go thru them and add a few. He does struggle with the zoom, cant hold it steady and loses the subject.

Well...the budget has just gone up. Got lucky and won a couple bucks from one of the poker machines at work...

I know I said get something cheap for they kid to use. I've read and researched quite a bit on some of the older dslr Nikons. Almost pulled the trigger on a gently used d3200. Well, I found a used d7100 body for $560...I'm going to offer $525 and see if they bite...I'm wanted an upgrade anyway, and figured my boy can use the d3300 I currently have...

Or should I say screw it, stick to the plan, and just get him one of the older D models and keep plugging away with the '33???

Just my opinion of course but I'd tell you to jump on the D7100, especially if you can get it down to $525, and pass down the D3300 which I think would be an excellent starting point for any beginning photographer. That's a huge step up for you and a lot of DSLR for your son to get started on, even if it doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the more advanced bodies. Plus, it's a body you're already well familiar with.

Ok things have changed in the past 20 minutes...I did one last check of Adorama,b&h, keh, and Robert's.

Adorama has a "D" rated 7100.... $490 shipped. I hit the add to cart, and paid for it. I kind of feel better getting from a place like Adorama than a stranger on Ebay...

Good for you, dad. That's a terrific camera, one that will keep you from having to "trade up" at some point if he takes to photography and sticks with it. And yeah, Adorama is a great place to buy with confidence. Well done.
