D70...should I or should I not?

Hi everyone,

This might seem laughable, but I was considering a Nikon D70. I've never owned anything beyond a Sanyo digital camera or a smart phone with a camera and want something that will take decent photos.

I can't spend a lot on this little venture at the moment, and so far I've been considering either a D70 or D80 as a result. My big dilemma is the D70 I'm looking at right now has no shutter actuation listed. I messaged the owner who in turn said they tried to get a shutter count using the Nikon shutter count website but kept getting a fail error...

Should I just keep looking? I've been looking for awhile and I'm getting a little frustrated. What do you think is reasonable for a D70?

I really appreciate it.

Thank you,

Up to $100 for the body. Up to $200 with a lens such as 18-70. If you're hung up on shutter count, tell him to take a pic (jpeg), email it to you and you can submit it to a shutter count site. Most lower end Nikon DSLRs are used by hobbyists who won't come halfway close to wearing out a shutter. Good luck.

Like Singlerosa says, its going to cost you around $200, how much have you got to spend?

Personally I wouldnt worry with the older models, get something like the D3300 which is still a great crop sensor camera and a great entry lever one.

You might also want to look at a Factory refurbished D3100. It is much newer tech then the D70 or D80.

Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera Body - Factory Refurbished with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G II DX AF-S ED Zoom Lens
$279.95

This is a good price for a D3100 and the 18-55 lens. This is a good starter camera and can do a great job for you.

I have bought from this company several times and they are a great company to deal with. Also their refurbished cameras are warrantied for 1 year which is a lot better than most that only give you a 90 day warranty.

I had a D70, but sold it to get a D3300. Over time you are going to spend a lot of time and effort (apart from money to buy lenses, filters and may be a tripod). So there is no sense in plonking down $200 for a D70 and a kit lens. Get a D3300 with its kit lens. Refurbished ones are really going cheap.

I still have my D70. It's a great camera, if a bit limited on the pixel count and small screen these days.

I wouldn't pay a lot for one...as others suggested, check out the refurbs before you spend a ton, and make sure you pay accordingly for the D70.

Snap ... first off, howdy and welcome to Nikonites!

Like others have suggested, I would probably try to find a new/refurb D3x00 that fits your budget so that you're getting newer technology. Technology isn't everything, but it helps when you already have all the technical assistance you can get when starting out.
