Insurance

Hello,

I'm going to be traveling to Africa for 15 days and I'm looking into getting insurance for my gear in case of damage or theft. I don't want to be losing out on $12,000+ in gear during vacation. Does anyone recommend any good insurance sites that would cover your gear if something was to happen?

Thanks!

Most of the time you can get it through your homeowners insurance. Might be the best place to start.

Like the other replies you have, give your house insurance company a quick call, explain your going on holiday, and see if they can help,
If not they might be able to recommend a company which will cover you.

I can do it through my house/car insurance company but it isn't cheap. If I take one to be covered for a full year (theft/damage), I pay around 4% of the value.

Home insurance might not cover trips abroad. I've been renewing my home insurance a few days ago and increased the total value of personal belongings outside home from the default £2000 to £4000. It cost me £10 extra of my premium, so it is not that expensive here. However, this is UK only, so I'd need additional cover to go abroad.

Having said that, while I was looking for alternatives, there were a few insurance companies offering to cover personal belongings worldwide. I don't know the details, and I suspect it might be a little expensive, but definitely worth looking for. So, if your home insurer doesn't cover your gear abroad, shop around.

In addition to asking your homeowner's insurer, if you're going with a tour company, ask if they offer the insurance you need.
