camera setting for tripod

Does the D7100 require any additional setting when using a tripod. I have just upgraded from a D300 which did require a setting change, but I don't see anything in the menus for the D7100.

Are you talking about using a timer or remote? In reality no settings are required for "using a tripod", though you may want to turn any VR on your lenses off.

I am using a remote, and have turned VR off where applicable to the lens. Just needed to know if I was remiss in seeing anything in the camera settings( there was a setting on the D300). Apparently you do not need to tell the camera if you are using a tripod..

Thanks for the reply

I was confused by the OP's question too. So I looked up "d300 Tripod Mode". And what do you know, the d300 live view feature has a "tripod" setting. It apparently changes the focus method and also allows the AF point to be moved anywhere in the frame while in live view.

That's strange, because I've had 6 different Nikon and none of them seem to have anything like that. Interesting that it was there on the D300, and more interesting that it was abandoned.

The D300 had Nikon's earliest iteration of Live View, the technology seems to have advanced somewhat since then. If I had a camera with a fold out screen, like on the D750, I would find uses for that function. On my D300, not so much...

I've used Live View on all my cameras - I've just not seen any kind of "Tripod Mode" function that goes with it. Perhaps they decided that it was superfluous given the way LV is used typically? There are tripod related functions (like virtual horizon) that I use all the time with a tripod, and the ability to focus anywhere on the sensor is available regardless, so I suppose they simply put it in "tripod mode" whenever it's turned on - or some derivation of it.

Just curious why would you turn VR off when using a remote?

If using a remote it would be safe to say the the camera is in a stable position. If VR is on but the camera is not moving, then the VR can actually create blur as it is trying to compensate for a movement that isn't there. So the VR is counteracting no movement....and in fact is creating movement.

VR is best left to slower handheld shots. So if using tripod, sand bag, whatever make sure to turn it off.

Cool, thanks! I did not know that.

The D300 is the only one that had it. As mentioned, it was the first iteration of Live View... and it was basically a manual type function. I tried it once on my D300... after having a newer camera with Live View, just to verify that it works... and have never used the Live View on the D300 since... It was pretty lame...

hehehe...I had to chuckle when he said he "upgraded from a D300". :)

I knew I had LV on my D300, but never saw the need to use it, so in effect, it's brand new! :) lol
