Not able to get the Shutter Actuations/Count for my Nikon D5300

I recently purchased Nikon D5300 with 18-140mm lens. Just love the image quality this camera produces.
I want to know my shutter actuations for which I downloaded Opanda IExif 2.3 software but when I open the photos clicked with this camera, I do not get the "Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera" entry itself. I also tried online tools where I have to upload images but even that did not work.
When I opened the photos clicked using Nikon D5100 (friend's camera), it was showing the "Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera" entry under "MakerNote (Nikon)" section.
Do anyone else face the same problem with Nikon D5300 or am I missing some settings in the camera. Please Help !!

The Makers Notes section of Exif is not a standard format, and Nikon modifies that format from time to time. This seriously confuses older Exif viewers.

The Opanda download link says:

Download Opanda IExif
Version: 2.3
License: Freeware ( License Agreement )
Size: 2.5 Mb
System: Win98 / Me / 2000 / XP / Vista
Date: 2008-04-22

That is more than six years without update. Which is ancient, and is a common fate for most Exif viewers (most are largely abandoned now). When I got a D800, I had to give up PhotoME for the same reason (it was OK for D300, but was very out of date for D800). Because, Nikon changes their Exif format, causing conflicts from newer cameras. Not in the basic stuff like exposure, but in the Manufacturers section, which needs new to access, but is where the good stuff is.

There is a very good solution though. ExifTool, which has been updated 28 times in 2014, if I count correctly. :) Active development, and the best there is. And free. Probably the reason the rest have been abandoned? :)

It is a command line viewer, and has many complex options, a serious tool. Which is Not spooky however, it does not cause any problems, because we can ignore all of that part. Because there is also a Windows GUI interface (Windows program operated regularly with the mouse, even drag and drop) that takes all the mystery out of it, in the best possible way. It is fantastic. It will show your Exif, all of it.

Exiftool - ExifTool by Phil Harvey

Then towards that page bottom, section Related Utilities - Windows, there is ExifTool GUI for Windows
ExifToolGUI

Just put them both into the same folder (and remove -k from file name as instructed) and run it as ExiftoolGUI. It is very pleasant to use, in conventional Windows sense. They ought to package it that way, but it requires the two downloads as described.
This one surely operates your newest cameras files, but you might subsequently also get a newer version now and then too. With this one, there will be newer updates. Which are largely to add new cameras, but some fixes too.

Thanks for the detailed answer Wayne !! This was indeed very helpful and exactly what I was looking for.
I went with the GUI version of the software and it is working great :)

Thanks Paul.. This worked for me.
The utility that Wayne suggested is a must try to get the EXIF info for most of the camera with proper GUI. Check it out !!

Thanks sonin, that is my strong opinion too. My count was behind, 31 updates in 2014, so far. :)
ExifTool certainly seems to be the big boys tool, yet the Windows interface makes it easy to use.

For example, the last update 9.76 was this:

Nov. 15, 2014 - Version 9.76 (production release)

Added support for the LFR format (same as LFP)
Added support for Samsung models which write 2 values for LensType
Added a new Samsung LensType (thanks Nick Livchits)
Added a few new Nikon LensID's (thanks David Püschel)
Added a new PentaxModelID
Added some new Olympus WhiteBalance2 values (thanks LibRaw)
Added a new EXIF:Compression value
Decode a new FujiFilm tag
Decode a few more private TIFF tags
Improved warning message if "DIR" or "FILE" is used literally on the command line
Improved "-j -b" output to encode any non-UTF8 values as Base64
Enhanced -fast option (FastScan API option) to allow file processing to be bypassed entirely
Changed conversions for a couple of Nikon 1 AF tags for consistency
Changed reported FileType for LNK, KEY, KTH, NUMBERS, NMBTEMPLATE and PAGES files to match extension
Fixed problems adding new XMP and deleting old XMP from MP4 videos
Fixed problem writing FileModifyDate/FileCreateDate when -overwrite_original_in_place is used

It is like that a few times a month. Active development.

You can also use Irfanview.
. Open the NEF file
. Open "Image Properties"
. Open EXIF info from the image properties window.

The shutter count is given in "total pictures" entry. This is the last entry in my version.

@aroy, What vers of Irfanview do you have? I have 4.38 and can't seem to get the info in the EXIF data. Is there a plugin I'm missing?

Also, I can't seem to get Irfanview to see NEF files. What am I missing (again)?

1. I have 4.37

2. I just downloaded and installed all the plugins.

Using Irfanview, the shutter count in EXIF data is only available in the NEF file. Some how it is not available in the JPEG that I generate from the NEF, though it is there and visible in other programs.

I am guessing that the D5300 has changed the format in some way that Irfanview doesn't recognize for the shutter count. I did discover that I can open NEF files with Irfanview if I go to the file first and click on Open with... but if Irfanview is open and I try to open a NEF file from the File>Open tab it won't see the NEF files. Strange??

By the way, I downloaded all of the plugins with the 4.38 version.

Thanks for your assist @aroy

The program that wrote the JPG probably left out the manufactures data part of the Exif. Adobe definitely does omit it.

Irfanview does seem to show it (in my models), but Shutter Count is in manufacturers data section, and Nikon does change that format. If you want to see all of your Exif data, that would be ExifTool, see post #3 in this thread.

Finally, sort of. I did get the Exif Tool Wayne mentioned to work for me, however Irfanview didn't. Irfanview is not working like @aroy gets it to work. I still cannot open a NEF file from within Irfanview. It doesn't show in the File>Open menu, however if I right click on a NEF file >Open with> Irfanview it will open. The Exif data does not show the shutter count or Venders Notes. See screen shot attached. Not a big deal. I think the D5300 file format just doesn't want to share with Irfanview. Ha!
