A wonderful friend has offered to host a site for me, and I need help getting a site to be hosted. Is it called a template? It should be said it is a photography site I'm wanting to create, and I can't pay rent. But a one time payment might be possible to get the best template for my needs.
I need a site that can support an unlimited number of photos, or a site plus a ftp able to manage the unlimited photos.

Looks like I will have serif webplus to create my new web site with. I'm not sure what version it will be, but it should do fine for what I need(I hope ;) ).

Bill, have a look at my travelthrutime website and see if that is how you want your photos displayed, if it is, I will talk to the man who wrote it to see how easy it would be to remove the photo album side from the rest of the gizmos he has put in

I haven't been able to really see the photo album. But on the few photos I did get to see, I liked the display when you click on the photo. Going to the original post the the screen sized version when clicking on it again.

Dude, you should look at wordpress. Very, very easy to set up. You can either have your site hosted or use the free version. I use the free version and i have tons of photos on my site. To get more storage, it is not very expensive. Give it a look.

Take a look at sites like Zenfolio (I'm there), Smugmug or Squarespace. They look fantastic and are a great value.

I think it all depends on what you plan on doing. To sell photos, the sites you mentioned are no doubt the best route to take. But, if you want to blog, Wordpress is the best. There is nothing necessarily wrong with free site builders, it really just depends on what you plan on doing with it ;)

I like wordpress, but 'most' people aren't that savvy :)

I like it to. I don't host my site, yet. I am still using the "free" version, but i am running out of space quickly. Even though i have sold photos from my Wordpress site, i don't feel it is set up as a true photo-selling platform. Though, they do have templates where you can make your photos prominent and the focal point of visitors, it is still a platform geared towards blogging. One annoying aspect of Wordpress, is the fact that their "engineers" always seem to change things around ever once in a while, just after you have gotten used to the last feature they changed or injected.

I've changed my mind for now, and I'll just post my photos here instead of on my own site too.
I need to take more time and eventually learn what type of site would be best for me in the long run.:)

But thank you everybody for your help and good advice.:)

I went with Zenfolio for the quick and easy setup, but also have Smugmug and WordPress (self hosted).

My goal is to use Zenfolio just for event galleries where I don't have a direct connection to the customer (only the client who books be for the event), and can fulfill that way. I want to get WordPress up and running for an overall better portfolio site and blog. I've got about 4 permutations of the WordPress site up right now while I look at WooCommerce and some others, but had a deadline with an event that didn't let me run with WooCommerce to completion.

The downsides to Smugmug, Zenfolio, or Squarespace are the $$. Not arguing that they might be worth the investment for the professional photographer making money from their site, but sounds like Bill was looking for no cost options.

Wordpress can be an option using their hosted environment on wordpress.com as well.

Bill, I would just look into posting the images on a free site like wordpress or flickr. Both will offer you a place to showcase your images without the hassle. You can also just cross link your images from flickr to wp as well.
If you are doing it for selling your images, then you would need to look a bit further into a host with enough storage. You can also try out wix and you can easily build a personal site for free.
