Need some strategy ideas.

Background
The local high school has a local photographer that has kind of become the official photographer. Correction, he is more of a cornerstone brick to the school. So much so that they have even put him on their website directing people there for athletic photographs. His work is, for lack of a better term, lazy. With everyone virtually funneled to him he's not aggressive with getting " the shot" during games. Sure he gets some, but he's not going after it. Add to it his images are soft and color correction really doesn't exist. Trying to go through the school or coaches is a brick wall.

The Question
I would like some suggested strategies for cracking this market, but not making this a hostile takeover attempt as he is a good likeable guy and a cornerstone of the high school, but I know in a side-by-side of our work I would win hands down - but he is so darn shielded from competition.

Thanks everyone.

Having a wife that will retire at the end of the school year from public education after 30+ years I can safely say you are butting your head against a brick wall, repeatedly.

That being said what can you do? You are going to have to get your work seen by as many people as possible. That might be going to the events and shooting your best and putting them on your website dedicated to just this project. Then finding a way to get the people to go to the site. Maybe handing out business cards or flyers at these events. Offer a loss leader of some sort. Offer online ordering at a price that beats the other guy (for now).

From what I have seen of schools they are a very closed system when it comes to deals like these. Is there anything you can offer the school (for free) that might swing them into at least adding you to the list of one they have now?

Good luck

Are there any minor sports or lower teams that he does not cover that you might be able to?

Just remember "where there's a will, there's a way" Good luck

I will crack this market. Have a couple ideas I'm formulating and once they have gelled I will share them. In the meanwhile I'm tapping the collective brain here.

Me thinks I would get the shots and simply offer them to the folks that would want to buy them and in my twisted way of looking at things like this, I would be inclined to be priced a little above the lackluster competition.

Parents that support their kids in sports (you all know who you are) will pay for good work.

Take photos around the school, school bus, events in the school make a collection, show them to a teacher, parents, etc..

If you've got Facebook, make friendship with people who has the school name in their profile, post photos....

I have a similar problem but now the paper sell their athletic photos online so I gave up in shooting athletics. I found that it doesn't pay as well (market dependent and parents bring their own gear) and the operating cost is high (you need to take a lot of shots to get THE SHOT).

Sorry to be negative about it but there are good markets out there and sounds like yours is one. Go out there and shoot. Nobody can't stop you from taking photos of athletics. Give out cards to friends. Use Facebook and their paid targeted advertising to get into the students' and parents' radar. Tag friends, parents and their kids who are athletes too that way you get your photos seen. No better business card than a great photo.

Good luck! ;)

Keep the ideas coming. I appreciate all of them. Even something that may seem a little out there, but you really put thought into, can always contribute to the final method of cracking this market.

I really need to start exploring and exploiting this whole Facebook thing. Made another sale directly as a result of that Facebook thing I'm so bad with.

make flayer and put em on the windshields, here we info boards at local shops where we can put adds for free, put flayer in your favorite bakery, grocery, etc

That's part of the issues I face as well. Our school district has a photographer on staff for the district, so it's a full time paid gig for him. I also ran into this with football from another dad that shoots pictures for football team, the booster club requested him.

Now both are nice guys, I know them both. So how I handled this was and it may not be to your liking. I shot this whole year for free, yes I said it.

The Dad I asked how he got his sideline pass, he basically told me he was chosen by the boosters to take all football pictures for 9th-12th. Well, to make a long story short I went above him, way above him to the district athletic director. He provided the sideline pass the day after I emailed him. Now I provided all details about me, my boys and how long I have been here. Basically a resume that pertained to take pictures, even provided my website and said if you don't like what you then I understand.

So, I got on the sidelines and started taking pictures. I provided the link via Twitter and Facebook and made sure those who cared about them were aware of the pictures.

So it was kind of funny to watch my site traffic, first game was maybe a couple hundred hits. Then the boys started talking about it and my site stats went through the roof after that. I was seeing my pictures all over the place. By the end of the season I had people asking for my business card, even had offers to shoot a few weddings and other events. Well when wrestling hit, I had my highest stats and you have to keep in mind that a wrestling team equals maybe 10 percent of the football team as far as athletes. Well I hit an all time high of 18k of hits in one day.

Man I was stoked. And my favorite moment was at the football banquet, with hundreds of parents that didn't know about my pictures, we're seeing them on a big screen during the whole event. The even thanked the full time guy and the other dad for taking pictures, and then I heard my name. Man I thought I won a Grammy or something like that. Later my son was asking me, Dad did you see all of pictures in the slide show which was a cool dad moment.

So to shorten this up, get yourself out there. Sell yourself, utilize the free sites to advertise. Twitter, facebook, Instagram or anything else in your area that will allow you to show your talents.

So I mentioned free, it wasn't easy to do and my wife didn't understand, but afte the banquet she did. I had parents ordering pictures from my site, asking me how much and all of that stuff. I sold through smugmug, you can use whatever you want.

Get your print prices setup early and don't price yourself to high at first till you establish your worth. It's a long process to get the attention, but once it starts then it takes off.

So don't go after his job, just prove you can do it better, advertise and do it cheap. I can and will alter this scheme in the future, just not yet. I didn't want to turn into another job, I have one. It's a passion to me and all of the attention, parents praising me and the simple fact the kids were using my pictures on social media was enough for me. You know how hard it is to be cool enough for teenagers to like something that an old guy did, it was at first but it didn't last long.

Sorry to be so wordy, but yet again you hit in my area of experience. Be nice to the other photographers as well, just show everyone how much better your results are and the rest will come.

Oh, and don't forget about the yearbook staff that will be taking pictures while you are. I actually got to help a few of them and that was cool again.

Print up your best shots and pass them around in the stands. That's how you create a buzz. After a while you'll figure out who buys then you just photograph those kids. Makes life so much easier. It works. Do it all the time. No one wants to go online and look through hundreds of pics. Put the product in there hands and they buy. We call them ATM shoots. Speculation sale is the industry term.

Update: So I was talking with a high school girlfriend of one of the soccer players and found out that some of the soccer players are not happy with the photos being generated. After soliciting information about what they didn't like it came back to what I said that his work is lazy - not trying to capture the shot our follow the action.

My strategy right now - going to work with one of the disgruntled players. Comp him some photos in trade for letting the team know about the game being shot and there is another photography option.

Prove your worth, word of mouth and social media are your best friends. Sounds like you have an in with the players girlfriend. I forgot to mention its a little easier for me because I have 3 sons that are in sports, well now 2 seeing how my wrestler graduates this year.

But I promises, once your in it will steamroll after that, almost to the point of being overwhelmed. But I always love the challenge.

Good luck, I know you can do it.

Hey Moab! I wouldn't get into so and so said this. That's highschool 101. Schools go with tried and true. No administrator likes drama. I might sound like a jerk. Trust me! Just shoot higher quality and move on. Professionalism is the king when it comes to Ad's and principals. Stay low and shoot straight. Oh! It's took up to 5 yrs to win accounts. Never wavered. Nothing easy with being a pro.

Speaking of Facebook, If the school itself has a Facebook page, you may be able to post some of your shots to it. Not as an advertisement, but to show school spirit and support. Of course you would link some contact information for anyone wanted to. May just be one way to get your shots seen by the school staff and parents.
