Going Social

Hi guys,

So this may seem a little surprising to many, but i have no social life
Digital Social Media is something that i detested for some reason (read FB) and never wanted to have anything to do with it.

Now that am planning to take photography a little seriously, i understand that i would be fighting an uphill battle without the social space.

Would like some help on how to do things & get the word out there.
Do i just open new accounts & add anyone i find and post randomly or is there is a method to the madness?

You open a Facebook account first. Add the people you know first. I am assuming this is a page for your photography? The key is to get people to like your page so that their friends will see it. You really need a personal page plus your photography page so that your friends will help you in sharing your page. A Facebook page gets your photos seen by more people than a webpage since your photos are shared to their Facebook page while they are there anyway.

FYI, I've gotten more likes, comments and follows from people I have absolutely no connection to on Instagram than anywhere else. If you want to get your stuff seen then I highly recommend getting on there and hashtagging posts appropriately. Facebook is great for promoting localized businesses, and for getting people to share your stuff, but I've gotten very little traction from it as their recommendation engine seems to rely on you paying them to boost posts. So it feels like I'm whoring my friends to get them to help with it by sharing posts.

I'm finding that you get what you put in, and if you're willing to blog and post links to it on FB and Twitter that it helps as well. It's as if you need to be something more than just a photographer to garner real attention - you need to be a story teller, reviewer and/or teacher. Figure out what plays well that you're comfortable with and go with it.

Another good thing about facebook, is that you can join photography groups, and share your photos with like minded people.

I am with a few group including anything photographic.
